Recapping Friday's Top Matches

Djokovic Beats Dimitrov and Raonic on Same Day

Djokovic outlasted defending champion Grigor Dimitrov in three sets to win a match that spanned over two days and advance to the quarterfinals, where he then defeated Milos Raonic.

After dropping the first set in his initial match, Djoker battled back to win the second set and entered Friday with a 2-1 lead in the third.

Djokovic managed to serve the match out, and he seemed relieved to pick up the victory, as seen in this video from Tennis TV:

The win pushed Djokovic into the quarters and set up a meeting with a fresh Raonic, who did not have to pull double duty Friday, unlike most players.

Despite that, Djokovic had a huge advantage entering the match, per ATP Media Info:

Things went according to script based on past results, as Djokovic survived a three-set battle against Raonic with an impressive third set after dropping the second.

By virtue of the wins over Dimitrov and Raonic, Djokovic kept his hopes alive to win just his second tournament of the year and his first since beating Kevin Anderson to win Wimbledon in July.

Halep Defeats Barty to Reach Quarterfinals, Tsurenko to Reach Semis

Halep continued her strong 2018 by defeating Ashleigh Barty in straight sets Friday and advancing to another quarterfinal. She then cruised past Lesia Tsurenko in another straight sets victory.

After grinding out a tough first set in the initial match that she won 7-5 on Thursday, Halep finished the job to win her seventh consecutive match on a hard court, according to WTA:

Halep reached the final at the Australian Open earlier in the year before finally winning her first career Grand Slam title at the French Open.

Although she was ousted in the third round at Wimbledon, the Romanian star has been on a major role as of late, per Jose Morgado of Diario Record:

On the heels of defeating Barty, Halep handled unseeded Lesia Tsurenko in the quarterfinals later Friday night.

It marked their first meeting in four years, and Halep continued her dominance in the series to the tune of a 5-0 advantage.

Federer Outlasts Mayer in 2nd-Set Tiebreak, Wins Thriller Against Wawrinka

After racing out to a 6-1 win in the first set, Federer needed a second-set tiebreak to oust Leonardo Mayer in the third round of the Western & Southern Open on Friday.

Fed nearly blew a 5-1 lead in the tiebreak, as Mayer got it back to 5-4, but the Swiss superstar was able to right the ship and take the breaker 8-6.

Although it was a tale of two sets for Federer, he was largely on his game Friday, as evidenced by his array of impressive winners:

With Stan Wawrinka making quick work of Marton Fucsovics, the stage was set for an all-Swiss quarterfinal between Fed and Wawrinka.

According to ATP Media Info, their match came on the heels of an important anniversary in both of their careers:

Federer and Wawrinka have enjoyed a great deal of success together as Olympic gold medalists, but their head-to-head history is one-sided.

While Wawrinka does have three wins over Federer in 24 tries, all of those victories came on clay, which gave Fed a major leg up. However, Wawrinka nearly outlasted the living legend, winning the first set in a tiebreak before dropping the second in another tiebreak.

Federer then took control in the decisive third to advance to the semifinals.
