Benfica have reportedly opened talks with Manchester United over a summer move for defender Matteo Darmian.

The Italian is out of favour at Old Trafford and is not part of manager Jose Mourinho's plans for the new season.

He would prefer to return to Serie A, but he is willing to listen to what Benfica have to offer, according to Simon Mullock of the Mirror.

Darmian joined Manchester United from Torino in 2015 but has not forced his way into the first team on a regular basis.

He managed just five Premier League starts for the club last season and looks to have fallen further down the pecking order after the Red Devils brought in right-back Diogo Dalot.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has revealed his club are interested in Darmian. He told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli (h/t Goal), "It's true that we asked for Darmian on loan with a right to buy."

Darmian said he wants to leave Manchester United this summer, as he wants to play more regularly, per Luke Edwards of the Daily Telegraph.

Tim Fosu-Mensah is another option who could come in at right-back for the Red Devils. The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace but will be hoping to break in to the first team after returning to the club.

Darmian has made it clear he wants to depart, but it remains to be seen if United are willing to sanction his sale given their injury situation.
