Everything You Need to Know About Day 20 of the World Cup

France will take on Belgium in the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup after both teams secured victories on Friday.

Les Bleus beat Uruguay 2-0 courtesy of goals from Raphael Varane and Antoine Griezmann. Belgium beat tournament favourites Brazil 2-1 thanks to a Fernandinho own goal and a strike from Kevin De Bruyne.

Here's a look at how the tournament is shaping up:

France 2-0 Uruguay

Uruguay suffered a blow ahead of the match as striker Edinson Cavani failed to recover from a calf injury picked up against Portugal in the last 16. He was replaced in the starting line-up by Girona’s Cristhian Stuani.

Oscar Tabarez’s side started the game well and looked marginally the stronger team in a tightly-contested first half. However, France managed to gain the advantage just before half-time.

A free-kick by Antoine Griezmann was swept into the penalty area and glanced past goalkeeper Fernando Muslera by Raphael Varane.

ESPN FC’s Dermot Corrigan offered his view of the goal:

Uruguay had an excellent chance to equalise just four minutes later after winning a free-kick of their own just outside the France area. The ball was sent it towards Martin Caceres who headed downwards but was denied by a superb save from Hugo Lloris.

Journalist Jonathan Johnson has been impressed with Lloris at the World Cup:

France looked brighter after the break and dominated the play which forced Tabarez to change his team. He brought on Maxi Gomez and Christian Rodriguez for Stuani and Rodrigo Bentancur after 58 minutes but then saw his side fall further behind two minutes later.

A speculative shot from range by Griezmann should have been dealt with comfortably by Muslera, but it slipped through his hands and dropped into the back of the net.

Freelance football presenter Alison Bender had sympathy for the goalkeeper:

Tempers flared shortly afterwards as Kylian Mbappe went to ground under minimal contract from Rodriguez. A melee ensured with both sets of players surrounding the referee and ended with yellow cards for both Mbappe and Rodriguez.

Sports journalist Robbie Dunne was not impressed with the French striker:

Uruguay did not lack for effort in the closing stages but seemed to tire and caused few problems for the French who held on comfortably. Les Bleus are now deservedly into the last four and real contenders to lift the World Cup.

Brazil 1-2 Belgium

Brazil almost opened the scoring after eight minutes when Thiago Silva managed to hit the post from close range. However, it was Belgium who broke the deadlock five minutes later when a corner deflected off Fernandinho and flew past goalkeeper Alisson.

The Red Devils doubled their lead just after the half hour mark with a quick counter-attack. Striker Romelu Lukaku turned and raced forwards before feeding Kevin De Bruyne who fired a low shot past Alisson.

TV presenter Gary Lineker shared his view of the goal:

Brazil tried to respond but a curling Philippe Coutinho shot parried clear by Thibaut Courtois was their best effort while Belgium continued to pose a threat.

Football writer David Cartlidge said Brazil were missing the suspended Casemiro:

Tite replaced Willian with Roberto Firmino at half-time and had a couple of penalty claims at the start of the second half. Referee Milorad Mazic correctly waved away appeals after Neymar dived following contact from Marouane Fellaini.

He also turned down an appeal from Gabriel Jesus after a challenge from Vincent Kompany after a VAR check.

Dale Johnson at ESPN FC explained why:

Douglas Costa was the next substitute to arrive for Brazil who dominated the game but struggled to work Courtois. Squawka Football highlighted their attacking play:

The Selecao finally pulled on back with just over 10 minutes to go when Coutinho found substitute Renato Augusto who headed past Courtois.

Coutinho then had a glorious chance to equalise after being picked out by Neymar as he raced into the box but could only sky his effort over the crossbar.

Neymar went even closer in stoppage time as his effort was tipped over the crossbar by a flying Courtois as Belgium held on for victory and a place in the last four.
