After making a deal to land former Oklahoma Sooners star Trae Young in the lottery Thursday night, the Atlanta Hawks were able to add former Maryland Terrapins guard Kevin Huerter with their second pick in the first round of the 2018 NBA draft.

The team took Huerter with the 19th overall pick in the draft.

After finishing with the worst record (24-58) in the Eastern Conference this past season, Atlanta now has a revamped backcourt that could help move the rebuilding process along.

Huerter enjoyed a solid freshman season (9.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists), and he followed that up with a breakout sophomore campaign. In 2017-18, the 6'7", 190-pound guard averaged 14.8 points on 50.3 percent shooting, including 41.7 percent from beyond the arc, and added 5.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

The former Terrapin played his way into becoming a first-round pick, although an injury concern may have given some teams cause to pause. He underwent surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right hand earlier this month. He is expected to be out of action for two months.

Given Dennis Schroder has made it known that he wants out of Atlanta, the Hawks were wise to address their backcourt. Although they traded the draft rights of point guard Luka Doncic, they wound up leaving the first round with Young and Huerter in tow.
