LeBron James Rumors: Celtics Signing Unlikely Due to Roster, Salary Cap

Tim Daniels

The Boston Celtics are reportedly "unlikely" to land Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James despite speculation linking the four-time NBA MVP to the C's in recent weeks.

On Friday, Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe reported the Celtics' potential pursuit of James is made "complicated" because of their lack of space under the salary cap and the need for a sign-and-trade deal with the Cavs in order to make the financial numbers work.

It will be impossible to keep track of every LeBron rumor in the coming months, because there are so many possible scenarios and the 33-year-old Ohio native isn't tipping his hand.

The Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs are the top five position landing spots outside of Cleveland, per OddsShark. The Lakers (-110; bet $110 to win $100) are the early favorite followed by the Sixers (+450). Boston is tied for fifth in the odds with San Antonio (+1000).

Boston is an appealing potential destination thanks to a strong foundation that allowed the team to reach the Eastern Conference Finals this past season despite injuries to Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward. Head coach Brad Stevens continued to establish himself as one of the NBA's best in the process.

The Celtics would need to move either Irving, Hayward or Al Horford in a potential James trade, and Cleveland is likely to request a multitude of future assets to help jump-start a rebuild, too. And all of that only comes into play if the 14-time All-Star selection decides he would prefer Boston.

"If you don't hear something coming from my voice, then it's not true," James told reporters about the endless stream of rumors in February.

While the Celtics are a logical fit on paper thanks to their status as a title contender, fans in Boston shouldn't get their hopes up about landing the NBA's gold standard quite yet.
