Scottie Pippen: LeBron James, Michael Jordan Can't Be Compared Due to Era, Roles

Scott Polacek

As LeBron James has put the Cleveland Cavaliers on his back once again to take them to their fourth straight Eastern Conference Finals, Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen is weighing in on the never-ending debate of whether Michael Jordan or James is the better player.

Pippen, who played with Jordan on the Chicago Bulls for 10 seasons, said "there's really no comparison" of the two, pointing to differences in officiating and the roles each played on their respective teams, according to Logan Murdock of the Mercury News.

"The truth of the matter is that's it's not a fair comparison to LeBron or Michael," he added.

Pippen made one comment that is sure to turn heads, as he said Wilt Chamberlain is the best-ever player.

It's notable that he didn't give the nod to Jordan considering they won six championships together during the 1990s as one of the most successful tandems in NBA history. Chicago ruled the league behind the two Hall of Famers.

Jordan was a scoring machine who frequently got the ball and went into lethal isolation sets with his drives and fadeaways from mid-range. James is more of a facilitator who consistently racks up triple-doubles a la Magic Johnson, but he is more than capable of taking over games as a scorer as well.

James is chasing Jordan in the rings department and is three behind thanks to a 3-5 record in the NBA Finals.

If he is going to add to that total this year, the Cavaliers will have to overcome a 2-0 deficit to the Boston Celtics after dropping the first two games of the conference finals at TD Garden.

Fortunately for Cleveland, the Celtics have won just a single contest on the road this postseason, so the three-time defending Eastern Conference champions have plenty of opportunity to climb back into the series. Game 3 is Saturday night at Quick Loans Arena.
