The infamous Honey Nut Cheerios beef between Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Garnett was allegedly nothing more than a rumor.
Appearing on Tuesday's episode of The Breakfast Club, former Boston Celtics swingman Paul Pierce said Garnett never told Anthony that his then-wife, La La, tasted like Honey Nut Cheerios.
Pierce, now an analyst for ESPN, said:
"That was a rumor, dude. See listen. I was there that night. They got into it, then everything happened in the tunnel. And I get on the bus and sit right next to KG and I was like, 'KG, did you say that?' He paused for a second and was like, 'Man you know I didn't say that.'
"I was like, 'How it escalate?' I asked him, and I asked him more than once, too. I don't know where they even got that from."
The exchange can be viewed below, beginning at the 25:00 mark:
Rumor has it that the comment was lobbed Anthony's way during a game between the Celtics and Knicks in January 2013.
After the two engaged in a heated altercation on the floor at Madison Square Garden, Anthony tried to confront Garnett back by the Celtics locker room and team bus. Anthony was suspended one game for his actions.
"There's certain things that you just don't say to men, another man," Anthony said at the time. "I felt like we crossed a line. But like I said, we both had an understanding right now, we handled it the way we handled it. Nobody needs to know what was said behind closed doors, so that situation was handled."
In her book, The Love Playbook, La La denied Garnett ever uttered the disparaging remark.
"Kevin Garnett in fact had never said that I tasted like Honey Nut Cheerios," she wrote, per the New York Post's Marc Berman. "I tried to figure out how this big lie was turned into a media firestorm. I still can't answer that one. ... Melo and Kevin are cool today. And now it's nothing but a faint memory."
