Diego Simeone's Girlfriend Carla Pereyra Says PSG Offered to Double His Wages

Paris Saint-Germain offered to double Diego Simeone's wages in order to take the tactician to France, but the Atletico Madrid manager opted to remain because he's too fond of Spain, according to his partner, Carla Pereyra.

Pereyra spoke to Informalia and lifted the lid on PSG's interest in recruiting her partner, touching upon Simeone's preference to remain coaching in La Liga (h/t Marca):

"Diego has received very big offers.

"Paris Saint Germain wanted to pay him double what he is on at Atletico, but we want to live here. I like Spain and so does Diego."

The Ligue 1 champions have since moved on in their hunt to appoint a successor to Unai Emery and announced former Borussia Dortmund chief Thomas Tuchel as their pick Monday:

Simeone has been a smash hit with Los Rojiblancos since arriving at their helm in 2011, and it was he who led the club to break up Barcelona and Real Madrid's duopoly in La Liga in 2014, when he led Atleti to their first league crown in 18 years.

Atletico finished fifth in La Liga the season Simeone arrived at the club, but it's nothing but progress since then, maintaining a top-three finish in every campaign since and ending this term above rivals Real Madrid.

It's easy to see why PSG have taken notice, and they'll hope Tuchel is the man to break their trend of failure in the UEFA Champions League, having failed to make it past the quarter-finals despite massive investment in recent years.

The Argentinian helped the Madrid giants to the UEFA Europa League title in his first season at the club, and he'll hope to clinch a second when his men face French challengers Marseille on Wednesday. He told the media of what he wants to see from his side in Lyon, via ESPN FC:

Perhaps PSG could do with developing more of that annoyance Simeone referred to, and for all the talent they acquire, it could be an ingredient like his player management and mental preparation that they're missing.

Squawka showed evidence of how attuned Simeone is to cultivating a stern defensive line in particular:

Pereyra's comments regarding Simeone's fondness for Spain suggest any exit from La Liga may never come, although there are bound to be future links with Italy, where he spent much of his playing career, or his native Argentina.

Simeone was the preferred candidate over Tuchel, it seems, but not even a double-your-money offer was enough to take "El Cholo" from the Wanda Metropolitano.
