Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner said Monday he considered making an NFL comeback for the 2018 season at the age of 47.

Warner talked about the itch to play while sitting in the St. Louis Cardinals' broadcast booth during Monday's MLB game between the Minnesota Twins and the Cardinals.

According to Frank Schwab of Yahoo Sports, Warner said:

"I was actually ready to, for this coming season, I actually talked to a coach and my wife said, 'Go for it, I think it would be great.' So I actually talked to a coach about possibly doing it if they needed someone, but then they went out and signed somebody. I don't think they thought I was serious. So I think we're completely done now."

Warner last played in 2009, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last year.

While Warner implied he won't play in the NFL again, he also spoke about having the desire to see if he can still perform at a high level:

"I don't know if I would ever really do it, because it's easy to sit up here and go, 'I feel great, I can throw it in my backyard, I could still play in the NFL.' I have too much respect for the game and those guys. But there have been moments where I was like, I feel so good and I look at the state of the quarterbacks sometimes in the league and say, 'I think I could do it better than them if I could get back up to form and spend some time.' I'm just hoping that one team, at some point, gives me another 7-on-7. Just give me 20 plays and let me see if I can still do it."

In Warner's final NFL season, he went 10-5 as a starter for the Arizona Cardinals and threw for 3,753 yards, 26 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

He also led them to a playoff win and threw for 584 yards, five touchdowns and one interception in two playoff starts that season.

Warner is one of the all-time greats with career numbers of 32,344 passing yards, 208 touchdowns and 128 interceptions across 12 NFL seasons with the St. Louis Rams, New York Giants and Cardinals.

He went 9-4 in the playoffs as well with three Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl win.

While quarterbacks such as Tom Brady of the New England Patriots and Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints continue to perform at an elite level at around the age of 40, it would be unprecedented for Warner to return and play well at 47.
