Angel Di Maria Hints at PSG Summer Transfer Amid Exit Rumours

Matt Jones

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Angel Di Maria has admitted he may be on the move this summer.

The Argentina international joined the Ligue 1 winners in 2015, and in the main he's been impressive at the Parc des Princes. However, earlier in the campaign he was on the fringes of the XI after the arrivals of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

While an injury to Neymar has given Di Maria more time on the field, speaking to France Football (h/t Naveen Ullal of Sport Witness), he said he expects PSG to spend big again in the upcoming transfer window, and he's not sure where that will leave him.

"I do not know [if I will be at PSG next season]; football is very weird … I'm happy here, but the club needs to bring in players and, for that, they have to sell other players," he said. "I was very disappointed not to be included in the starting XI, because I was in a good position."

Di Maria added that he was "boiling" because he believed he should've been more involved at the start of 2017-18.

Now 30 years old, the midfielder is in the peak of his career, and in the main this term when he has been involved he's excelled. Di Maria has started 24 league games under Unai Emery, grabbing 11 goals and six assists in the process.

As noted by WhoScored.com, his contribution has been impressive:

Still, with Di Maria typically lining up on one of the flanks, there's no guarantee next term he'll get as many games, especially with Neymar back in the fold.

In addition to the Brazilian, Mbappe has been playing off the right wing this season, while the talented Julian Draxler is another excellent option on the left flank. Given they're younger options, and with Emery confirming he'll leave in the summer, a new manager may prefer to invest time in them than in someone like Di Maria.

The Argentina man still has a lot to offer nevertheless. Di Maria is hard-working, versatile and can create spectacular moments in the final third. As we can see courtesy of Goal, he's capable of opening up a game with something special:

If Di Maria were to leave PSG in the summer, there'd be no shortage of interest from a number of clubs.

Still, getting him on board wouldn't be straightforward. In France he'll be on a handsome contract, and while he's 30, you can bet PSG would want to recoup a decent amount of money for a player who is still a class act. However, the French club are being investigated by UEFA regarding a breach of Financial Fair Play rules, per Ben Rumsby of the Daily Telegraph.

The new manager will have his own opinions on this star-studded squad in Paris. And while the likes of Neymar and Mbappe will always be regulars, perhaps the incoming coach will find a regular spot for Di Maria in the XI.
