Christian Eriksen Asked How to Move 'To a Bigger Club' Amid Barcelona Rumours

Christian Eriksen asked how to leave Tottenham Hotspur for "a bigger club" amid rumours he is wanted by Barcelona, according to football agent Bayram Tutumlu.

Tutumlu—who serves as an agent to former Denmark and Barcelona star Michael Laudrup but does not represent Eriksen—told Danish newspaper BT (h/t Metro) he met with the Spurs playmaker early in the season. He said:

"Christian Eriksen invited me to his house in London in September and asked me what he needs to do to get to a bigger club.

"I told him that a really big club wanted him. When I visited Barcelona with my adviser Evren Sahin and Brondby's owner Jan Bech Andersen, the Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu told us that Eriksen was going to become the next big player in Denmark after Michael Laudrup."

Eriksen arrived at Spurs from Ajax in 2013 and has cemented his status as one of the Premier League's top attacking midfielders over the last five years.

The 26-year-old has only enhanced that further this season after notching 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.

Football writer Ryan Baldi believes he would have been a better choice for Barca than Philippe Coutinho, whom they signed from Liverpool in January:

The pair share a number of similar qualities. Like Coutinho, Eriksen also specialises in shooting from distance, per OptaJoe:

Coutinho is capable of carving open defences with his passing in the final third. So too is the Dane a sublime passer of the ball, as Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe noted in Spurs' UEFA Champions League clash with Juventus:

What perhaps separates the pair is Eriksen is more consistent in his ability to deliver his best each week—though Coutinho has improved in this regard this season—and he can arguably offer more control over proceedings than the Brazilian.

Spurs are an exciting project to be a part of under manager Mauricio Pochettino, but they're yet to win honours as part of it and a player of Eriksen's calibre could be turning out for a side that win one or more trophies each season.

He'll be an expensive purchase, though, particularly in light of Coutinho's costly move to the Camp Nou, so landing him would be difficult for any suitor, even the few that have the financial resources to fund the move.
