The misdemeanor case for Atlanta Hawks guard Dennis Schroder "has been transferred to the DeKalb County District Attorney's office with the recommendation that it be prosecuted as felony aggravated battery," according to Michael Cunningham of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. 

Schroder and three other men were arrested on misdemeanor battery charges on Sept. 29 following a fight in a shopping center parking lot. ESPN.com reported the fight happened at a hookah bar in the Atlanta suburb of Brookhaven.

Cunningham updated that the Dekalb District Attorney's office noted the "case is open and under investigation with no decision on charges," however.

According to Cunningham's original report, police obtained a video that allegedly shows "Schroder 'initiate contact' with the victim" and all four people who were arrested "struck the victim with their hands and feet."

The victim sustained serious injuries in the alleged altercation.

"The victim’ s medical records ... indicate that the victim suffered a torn meniscus and a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)," DeKalb Assistant Solicitor-General Tommy McNulty wrote to DeKalb District Attorney Sherry Boston. "These injuries require multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation. As such, this case should be handled by the District Attorney's Office."

If charged with and convicted of felony aggravated battery, Schroder could face up to 20 years in prison. The Hawks, meanwhile, have maintained that they would take disciplinary action after the legal proceedings took place.

"That behavior is unacceptable, will not be tolerated by the Hawks organization, and will result in discipline for Dennis at the appropriate time once the matter has been more fully developed through the law enforcement process and otherwise," general manager Travis Schlenk said in October, per Cunningham. "Dennis has accepted responsibility for his actions. He looks forward to learning from this incident and focusing on the season."
