Former Miami Dolphins, Florida Marlins and Florida Panthers owner Wayne Huizenga has died. He was 80.

An assistant confirmed the news to the Associated Press on Friday.

The Illinois native founded Waste Management Inc. and AutoNation while also playing a key role in the growth of Blockbuster Video and Swisher Hygiene during a business career that spanned five decades.

Forbes estimated his net worth at $2.8 billion.

His involvement in sports ownership began in 1990, when he purchased a minority stake in the Dolphins. He would become full owner of the NFL franchise in 1993, the same year the Marlins and Panthers began play as expansion teams in MLB and the NHL, respectively.

Huizenga said the inability to win a Super Bowl with the Dolphins before selling the team in 2008 was a letdown, per ESPN.

"If I have one disappointment, the disappointment would be that we did not bring a championship home," he said. "It's something we failed to do."

Huizenga did oversee the Marlins' World Series title in 1997.
