Oshae Brissett Leads Syracuse to Comeback Win vs. ASU in 2018 NCAA Tournament

Syracuse was the last at-large team to receive an NCAA tournament berth.

The Orange proved the selection committee correct Wednesday night.

Oshae Brissett had a double-double and Tyus Battle added 15 points, as Syracuse got itself into the field of 64 with a 60-56 win over Arizona State in their First Four matchup. The Orange will play sixth-seeded TCU on Friday.

Arizona State began the second half on an 8-0 run and led nearly the entire way. The Orange led for less than 30 seconds after the break until a Battle three with 1:52 remaining put them ahead for a final time. The Sun Devils had multiple chances as the clock ticked down to tie or go ahead, including a Shannon Evans II missed three on their final offensive possession, but failed to convert.

Brissett finished the game with 23 points and 12 rebounds, his second double-double in as many games. The freshman forward stretched the floor and knocked down three threes while also forcing his way to the free-throw line by pounding the ball inside.

Syracuse attempted 23 shots at the charity stripe compared to just 10 for Arizona State. Both teams were awful at the line, with the Orange's 13-of-23 rate and struggles down the stretch keeping the door open. Paschal Chukwu drew multiple intentional fouls as Arizona State attempted to extend the game, but he hit three of his final four shots at the line in big moments.

Frank Howard also scored 10 points to round out double-figure scorers for Syracuse in the defensive struggle.

The game was often difficult to watch, as both teams played at a snail's pace and missed a ton of shots. Syracuse won despite shooting 40.8 percent from the floor.

Arizona State tried to fend off Syracuse's vaunted zone defense by jacking up threes, but the attempts didn't drop. The Devils attempted 32 of their 52 shots from three but converted only 11.

Kodi Justice led the way with 15 points and five assists as one of four players in double figures. Evans (14 points), Tra Holder (11 points) and Mickey Mitchell (10 points) also scored in double digits. Those four players were responsible for 46 of Arizona State's shot attempts.

The Orange move on to play a TCU team that began the season 12-0 before skidding to a 9-11 finish. The Horned Frogs lost their final two games but could present an interesting challenge for Syracuse. They finished the regular season averaging 83.0 points per game and were second in the nation in assists per game.

Syracuse's desire to slow opposing teams down offensively will be a contrast to TCU's uptempo style, and the Frogs' passing ability could allow them to find the holes in the Orange zone necessary to move on. Either way, Syracuse will leave Dayton victorious after missing the tourney altogether a year ago.
