It may have been senior night Saturday at Cameron Indoor Stadium, but it was freshman phenom Marvin Bagley III who stole the show as the No. 5 Duke Blue Devils bested the No. 9 North Carolina Tar Heels, 74-64, in their regular-season finale.
Bagley, who was limited to three points in the first half, erupted over the final 20 minutes en route to 21 points (9-of-14 shooting), 15 rebounds and two blocks against North Carolina's undersized front line and helped the Blue Devils erase a 13-point second-half deficit.
Beyond Bagley, a long-range awakening propelled Duke to a season-series split with the Tar Heels.
After shooting 1-of-10 from distance in the first frame, Duke drilled eight of 15 attempts to lead a furious rally that included timely buckets from Gary Trent Jr. (13 points) and Trevon Duval (seven points).
The Athletic's Seth Davis highlighted the dichotomy that defined Duke's effort and noted it could foreshadow the team's trip to the NCAA tournament:
The Blue Devils also received a quality outing from guard Grayson Allen.
Suiting up in front of the Cameron Crazies for the final time, the senior worked his way through some shooting struggles and finished with 13 points (5-of-14 from the field), five assists, five rebounds and five steals.
As ESPN.com's Mike Schmitz observed, Allen was at his best when he was able to attack the basket with a full head of steam:
The Tar Heels countered with four double-figure scorers, including 16 points from sharpshooter Cameron Johnson, as they effectively sliced into the teeth of Duke's zone early and often.
However, an off night from floor general Joel Berry II and a second half that saw UNC shoot 3-of-14 from three ultimately doomed head coach Roy Williams' squad.
Berry posted six points on 3-of-11 shooting (0-of-7 from three) and finished in single digits for the first time since North Carolina's 95-91 overtime loss against NC State on Jan. 27.
With the regular season now over, both squads will prepare for the ACC tournament at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Duke will be the No. 2 seed by virtue of its win, while UNC dropped out of a double-bye and into the sixth seed with the loss.
