Jason Jordan underwent neck surgery Tuesday and will be out indefinitely, WWE announced.

WWE medical director Dr. Joseph Maroon provided a statement about the former Raw tag team champion: "He had an injury to a disc in his neck which resulted in significant pain that was refractory to all conservative measures. It was decided to do a minimally invasive operation to decompress the nerve, to allow it to heal."

The announcement comes after the Wrestling Observer Newsletter's Dave Meltzer (h/t Uproxx's Bill Hanstock) reported Jordan was dealing with a neck issue that was giving him "trouble gripping with his hands." Meltzer listed Arn Anderson, Edge and Chris Benoit as former wrestlers who had experienced similar problems.

Jordan's wife, April Everhart, responded to the rumors on Facebook on Tuesday, saying Jordan's injury was only minor and that he "will be back in no time" (h/t Wrestling Inc's Marc Middleton).

WWE had written Jordan's health into his ongoing storyline with Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and The Bar.

At the Royal Rumble, Jordan appeared to be suffering from a concussion after hitting the ring post face-first. Shortly after Rollins tagged him into the match, he looked groggy and tagged back out, and The Bar won the match.

On Monday night's Raw episode, Jordan was supposed to wrestle alongside Rollins but pulled out after he said the WWE medical team wouldn't clear him to wrestle:

The timing of Jordan's neck surgery couldn't be much worse.

After largely treading water on the main roster, Jordan was hitting a sweet spot as a singles wrestler. He was generating a consistent reaction from the WWE Universe—albeit overwhelmingly negative—and looked poised for a WrestleMania 34 feud with Rollins.

Now, it's unclear when he'll be able to return to the ring, and by the time he does, much of the momentum he has generated over the last month or so could be gone.
