Villanova is still the nation's top-ranked team, but Virginia is closer in its rearview mirror than ever.

The Cavaliers picked up an extra 16 first-place votes in the latest Associated Press poll, bringing them within 35 points of the top-ranked Wildcats. Virginia gained the boost thanks in large part to a 65-63 win over fourth-ranked Duke on Saturday.

Purdue, Duke and Michigan State round out the Top Five.

Virginia, which began the season unranked, held Duke to 22 first-half points and left with a win at Cameron Indoor Stadium despite a 30-point night from Marvin Bagley III. The Cavaliers played within themselves, committing just five turnovers to Duke's 16 and overcoming a 44-31 rebounding disadvantage.

"They find ways," Cavaliers coach Tony Bennett told reporters. "They're a team that's a joy to coach because they're pretty clear who they are, and it doesn't matter who's hitting the shots."

With only one new team entering the rankings—Kentucky, a re-entry—the biggest changes happened within the Top 25.

West Virginia and North Carolina both saw major drops after two-loss weeks. Host TCU upended the Mountaineers before a visiting Kentucky team roared back in the second half for an 83-76 win on West Virginia's home floor. The Wildcats trailed by 15 at halftime but outscored West Virginia 50-28 in the second frame, with Kevin Knox scoring a career-high 34 points.

"I love atmospheres like this," Knox told reporters. "I love playing away games and going against people on the road. That was something that I loved growing up, when the other team starts yelling and all of the hype, the student section. All of that just gets me going. It's just something I live for."

West Virginia's pair of losses dropped it eight spots to No. 15.

North Carolina moved back nine spots to No. 19 after losses to Virginia Tech and NC State, both of which are unranked. The Tar Heels allowed their in-state rivals to knock down 15 threes in a 95-91 home loss Saturday.

North Carolina is just 5-4 through its first nine games of ACC play and 16-6 overall.

Auburn continued its surprising ascent into the national conversation with wins over Missouri and LSU, moving up eight spots to reach a season-best No. 11 rank.
