Florida State to Play in Bowl Game Despite Not Meeting Eligibility Requirements

The Florida State Seminoles will still play in the Independence Bowl against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Dec. 27 despite an issue regarding their 77-6 victory over the Delaware State Hornets on Nov. 18.

According to college football writer Brett McMurphy, "Delaware State did not have enough scholarship grants-in-aid over a two-year period," which meant Florida State's win shouldn't have counted as one of the six victories needed for bowl eligibility.

"This monumental error should have been caught at three levels: the school, conference and NCAA," a source said to McMurphy. "It's too late to do anything now, they'll still play in the game. If it was funny, it would be a comedy of errors."

A user on Reddit had initially discovered the problems regarding Delaware State's scholarships.

Thursday's report is another twist in a dismal 2017 season for the Seminoles.

First, they lost starting quarterback Deondre Francois to a season-ending knee injury in the opening game of the year, which was a 24-7 defeat to the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Then, Florida State won just six games—its fewest since 1981. Former head coach Jimbo Fisher wasn't even around for the final regular-season game as he had left to take over the Texas A&M Aggies.

The questions surrounding Fisher's future had a disastrous impact on recruiting for Florida State. According to 247Sports' composite rankings, the Seminoles have the 45th-best recruiting class in 2018 following early signing day Wednesday. Florida State had the sixth-best class in 2017.

At this point, Seminoles fans will be happy to see the calendar turn over to 2018.

The oversight regarding Florida State's bowl status carried somewhat significant consequences, as McMurphy noted the Buffalo Bulls, Western Michigan Broncos and UT San Antonio Roadrunners all had six wins but were overlooked during the bowl selection process.
