No. 1 Duke dropped a game. No. 2 Kansas lost two. But despite losing a number of top contributors from their national championship team a year ago, Villanova stands tall.

The Wildcats returned to their perch as the nation's top-ranked team in the latest AP poll, leapfrogging a Michigan State team that ranked ahead of them a week ago. The Spartans sit in the No. 2 spot, followed by Wichita State, Duke and Arizona State.

The weekend proved disastrous for the nation's top two teams, with Duke's defense falling apart in an 89-84 loss to Boston College and Kansas dropping a home game to Arizona State. 

The Jayhawks' loss to Arizona State was their second in a week and their first stretch of back-to-back defeats since 2013. Kansas coach Bill Self called his team the "softest" he's had during his tenure.

"Maybe, maybe I shouldn't be as surprised, and maybe I need to change," Self told reporters. "I'm not ready to accept that that's the best we've got, but it's pretty embarrassing to keep looking at the game or the tape afterward and saying, 'Well, this is what we don't have.' We've been saying it now the entire year, at least from a defensive and competitive standpoint."

Kansas dropped to No. 13 following its down week.

Arizona State's upset road win led to the Sun Devils moving up 11 spots to No. 5. Ranked fourth nationally at 91.8 points per game, Arizona State has reeled off nine straight wins to open the season and appears to be a threat for the Pac-12 title.

After posting losing seasons in each of his first two years at Arizona State, Bobby Hurley appears to finally have the combination of talent and experience to run his full system. Barring a major downturn, the Devils should return to the tournament for the first time since 2013.

West Virginia moved up seven spots to No. 11 after taking down Virgina and going on the road for a win at Pitt.

Notre Dame went in the opposite direction after an 80-77 loss to Ball State. 

Florida State leads the new entries into the Top 25 at No. 19. The Seminoles are sitting at 9-0 on the season and boast a road win over Florida.

Arizona also returns to the rankings at No. 23, and Texas Tech rounds things up at No. 24.
