The Rock's Possible Return and the 5 Most Controversial Stories of the Week

Alfred Konuwa

WWE's week was filled with both planned and unplanned controversy: whether it's the recent viral infection that sent the Raw locker room and WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs into a frenzy or the major invasion angle that kicked off Monday night on Raw.

Having no offseason means WWE is susceptible to making headlines at all times of the day or night, and this never seemed to be more true than the week just gone.

But with Survivor Series on the horizon, WWE is set to announce some potentially game-changing news for the pay-per-view, as a current or future WWE Hall of Famer could be in line to officiate the main event.

The Rock, Steve Austin Among Rumored Names to Appear at Survivor Series

The Brock Lesnar vs. Jinder Mahal showcase at Survivor Series figures to have a special guest referee, and big names have been flying around more than Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose during their babyface comeback.

John Cena was rumored name by PWInsider (h/t Marc Middleton of Wrestling Inc). Later in the week, both The Rock and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin emerged as potential guest referees, per Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Middleton).

The novelty of a first-time clash between world champions from opposing brands while a living legend oversees proceedings makes the Survivor Series main event the type of must-watch spectacle that has defined WWE Network in recent months.

Ronda Rousey to Lead Horsewomen vs. Horsewomen Dream Match?

The flirtations between WWE and Ronda Rousey continue to heat up. Meltzer recently reported that officials are planning a Horsewomen vs. Horsewomen matchup at WrestleMania (h/t Middleton).

The feud between WWE's Horsewomen, Bayley, Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks, and Team Rousey was furthered this past summer at the Mae Young Classic. And while tensions between the sides reads like more of a friendly rivalry, expect more animus and physicality should WWE land the high-profile signing.

Rousey has not been shy about her love for pro wrestling. Look no further than her "Rowdy" nickname—a homage to the late Roddy Piper—for an indication of her fondness for WWE. The former UFC women's bantamweight champion has been in and out of major WWE pay-per-views and events, and it seems like only a matter of time before her in-ring debut.

Shane McMahon and the SmackDown Live Roster Put Raw Under Siege

Shane McMahon and SmackDown Live placed Raw under siege, and while some complained that the major angle was bogged down by a lack of emphasis on brand pride leading up to the attack, viewers didn't care.

Both Raw and SmackDown Live saw generous bumps in viewership this past week as the #UnderSiege bounce is real, per ShowBuzzDaily (h/t Middleton).

With SmackDown Live drawing a line in the sand, several subplots seem primed to contribute to satisfactory follow-ups and payoffs.

General manager Daniel Bryan doesn't seem to be on board with his commissioner's almost Napoleonic tactics of invasion. With Sami Zayn, who already lost his spot to Randy Orton, and Kevin Owens pretty much guaranteed to be on the outside looking in, there's a good chance the two jilted Superstars play into the finish of the SmackDown vs. Raw Survivor Series match by screwing over Team SmackDown Live. Will Bryan assist them as part of a shocking heel turn?

And how will Raw retaliate? Will this traditional Survivor Series matchup pit Kurt Angle and McMahon against one another in the ring for the first time since their infamous King of the Ring contest in 2001?

Brand loyalty or not, Survivor Series is getting very interesting very quickly.

Viral Infection Continues to Plague Raw Locker Room

WWE shocked fans with the sudden news of Kurt Angle's return to the ring at WWE TLC, but the bigger story is the ongoing virus that is plaguing the Raw locker room.

The company has been vague with the details of the contagious illness, only opting to call it a viral infection, but it is believed to either be the mumps or viral meningitis, per Raj Giri of Wrestling Inc.

Roman Reigns, Bray Wyatt and Bo Dallas are just three of the WWE Superstars who have been infected with the illness, and with commentator Tom Phillips conspicuous by his absence, it's fair to wonder whether his absence has something to do with this ailment as well.

The viral infection has only hit the Raw locker room, and with WWE taking every precaution to ensure it doesn't spread further, hopefully it doesn't negatively affect a compelling Survivor Series card.

WWE Announces Record Revenues, Huge Profits for Q3 2017

WWE announced its Q3 2017 earnings on Thursday, and the two big takeaways pointed toward WWE's profits—which successfully rallied following several cost-cutting measures in 2017—and the continued slow pace of WWE Network subscriber growth.

WWE Network reported just 1.52 million subscribers as WWE continues to languish in the 1.5 to 1.6 million range, a number that only sees its significant growth during WrestleMania season.

That is particularly noteworthy because it points to the ineffectiveness of WWE's efforts to create must-see attractions on pay-per-view. No Mercy featured a double main event, with John Cena battling Roman Reigns for the first time and Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman. It was promoted as WrestleMania coming early, but it failed to translate to a palpable bump in subscribers.

Revenues from WWE Network, live events and escalating television deals, combined with continued cost-cutting measures, will continue to make the promotion comfortably profitable. But producing steady growth for WWE Network continues to be a frustrating puzzle for CEO Vince McMahon and Co.
