CC Sabathia Placed on 10-Day DL with Hip Injury

Rob Goldberg

The New York Yankees announced Saturday they placed starting pitcher CC Sabathia on the 10-day disabled list with a right hip strain.

The 37-year-old lefty dealt with knee and hamstring injuries last season, limiting him to 148.2 innings, the second-fewest of his career. This was a disappointment for a player who topped 200 innings every year from 2007 to 2013 and has averaged 195 innings per year in his 17 seasons in the majors.

On the plus side, he was extremely effective when on the field, producing some of the best numbers he has had in years.

Sabathia finished 2017 with a 14-5 record and 3.69 ERA while helping the team reach the American League Championship Series.

This earned him a one-year, $10 million deal in the offseason to give him his 10th year in New York. So far this season, he has produced a 4.00 ERA across two starts.

Although an injury to the veteran left-hander could be a disappointment for the Yankees, the team has a lot of pitching depth.

Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray and Jordan Montgomery will be able to pick up the slack in the rotation, while the elite offense should be able to win games even when the starters struggle.
