Manny Pacquiao's Defeat to Jeff Horn Rescored by WBO Judges, Same Result Reached

Jeff Horn's controversial unanimous-decision victory over Manny Pacquiao has been vindicated after World Boxing Organisation (WBO) judges rescored the match and reached the same verdict.

The governing body took another look at the match after being implored to do so by Pacquiao and his camp, but the WBO announced its decision and said The Hornet won seven rounds to Pac-Man's five:

"Upon the analysis, the findings stated that Pacquiao won the 3rd, the 8th and 9th by 100%; the 5th round was won by 80%; and the 11th round by 60%. Horn won the 1st, 6th and 12th rounds by 100%; rounds 2nd, 4th, and 7th by 80%; and then, the 10th round by 60%. From the results, it can be established that Pacquiao won 5 rounds while Horn won 7 rounds."

The statement detailed that five "anonymous, competent" judges from different nations watched the fight back with no sound.

The WBO also noted the re-evaluation was carried out for transparency purposes as the body has no power to overrule a decision once it's been made. It also clarified the rounds Horn won:

"On the other hand, the judges findings stated that Horn won the first, sixth, and 12th rounds by 100%; by 87.5%, he won the fourth and the seventh; the second was won by 75%; none were won by 62.5%; and the even rounds were the 10th and the 11th."

Horn maintained his unbeaten professional record and won the WBO welterweight title with victory at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, the former schoolteacher's birthplace and hometown.

The fact the match was held in Horn's backyard fuelled some of the controversy related to the result, although the Daily Telegraph's Brad Davidson defended the decision in the wake of the WBO's evaluation:

While it's true Pacquiao appeared to win the fight and land the more significant blows to his opponent, fans and critics alike should be able to trust in the WBO's decision.

However, one need only take another look at the fight statistics to see why Pacquiao might feel aggrieved to have suffered a seventh career defeat, per ESPN Stats & Info:

Horn's head trainer, Glenn Rushton, recently told Australian network Channel 7 (h/t Courier Mail) the Brisbane Entertainment Centre looked the most likely venue to stage a rematch between the two:

“We could have a really bad storm, we could have a cyclone for all we know. So there's a lot of risks there in trying to do that so I think the safe option would be to go to Boondall."
