NBA Summer League 2017: Scores and Highlights from Saturday's Las Vegas Results

Tim Daniels

The 2017 Las Vegas Summer League rolled on Saturday with a jam-packed schedule of eight games from the Cox Pavilion and the Thomas and Mack Center in Paradise, Nevada.

Markelle Fultz of the Philadelphia 76ers and Lonzo Ball of the Los Angeles Lakers, the top two picks in last month's NBA draft, took center stage on Day 2. It was the Vegas debut for Fultz, who previously played in the Utah Summer League, while Ball looked to bounce back after a lackluster opener Friday.

Let's check out the complete slate of matchups, which will get updated with results through the conclusion of play Saturday. That's followed by a recap of the action.

Saturday's Schedule

Memphis Grizzlies 91, Washington Wizards 88

Dallas Mavericks 91, Chicago Bulls 75

Portland Trail Blazers 72, Utah Jazz 63

Toronto Raptors 97, Minnesota Timberwolves 72

Miami Heat 75, San Antonio Spurs 74

Boston Celtics 86, Los Angeles Lakers 81

Cleveland Cavaliers 95, Houston Rockets 90

Philadelphia 76ers 95, Golden State Warriors 93

Grizzlies 91 (1-0), Wizards 88 (0-1)

Wayne Selden Jr. hit a game-winning jumper while being fouled with 2.3 seconds left to give the Grizzlies a thrilling victory over the Wizards to open their run in the Vegas Summer League.

Selden, who played just 14 NBA games during a rookie season split between Memphis and the New Orleans Pelicans, is making a push for a larger role in year two. He scored a game-high 28 points to go with six rebounds, three steals and two assists.

The NBA highlighted his clutch shot:

Wade Baldwin IV added 19 points for the Grizzlies. Deyonta Davis pulled down an impressive 14 boards but also racked up eight personal fouls (players foul out on their 10th infraction) and scored just two points.

Jared Cunningham led the way for the Wizards with 26 points in 19 minutes. He knocked down seven of his 12 shots from the field and 10 of his 11 free-throw attempts.

J. Michael of CSN Mid-Atlantic commented on the shooting guard's outing:

Daniel Ochefu also put together a nice effort despite the loss. The Villanova product tallied 13 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks, three assists and two steals.

The Grizzlies will attempt to remain unbeaten Sunday when they battle the Sacramento Kings. The Wizards return to action Monday to face the Heat.

Mavericks 91 (1-0), Bulls 75 (0-1)

The Mavericks put together an efficient day across the board to cruise past the Bulls in both teams' first game in Vegas.

Most summer-league games are marred by poor shooting and mental mistakes. Dallas bucked the trend by connecting on 46.5 percent of its shots from the field and 88.2 percent from the free-throw line. It also tallied 17 assists compared to 11 turnovers.

Brandon Ashley led the charge with 21 points. The Mavs highlighted some of his work:

Dennis Smith Jr., the team's first-round pick in this year's draft, and Yogi Ferrell also reached double figures in scoring with 14 points each for Dallas.

Lauri Markkanen, whom the Bulls acquired as part of the blockbuster Jimmy Butler trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves, had a strong debut with 14 points and eight boards. He was one of six Chicago players to hit double digits in points, but the team received little other offense.

Maybe the University of Arizona product played well enough to get his name spelled correctly on his jersey for the next game. Sean Highkin of The Athletic showcased the mistake:

The Phoenix Suns are next up for the Mavericks on Sunday. Chicago's equipment crew gets an extra day to fix Markkanen's jersey before the Bulls battle the Atlanta Hawks on Monday.

Blazers 72 (1-0), Jazz 63 (0-1)

A pair of 2017 first-round draft picks turned in standout performances Saturday, as the Blazers beat the Jazz in their first Las Vegas Summer League outing.

Caleb Swanigan registered a double-double for Portland, as he led the team in scoring with 16 points and added 13 rebounds.

As seen in the following video, courtesy of the Blazers, Swanigan did much of his damage in the paint:

For the Jazz, guard Donovan Mitchell was the player of the game, pacing the squad with 19 points to go with four steals, two rebounds and two assists.

Mitchell struggled overall from behind the arc, shooting just 25 percent, but he found a good shooting rhythm on a few occasions, including this trifecta courtesy of the Jazz's official Twitter account:

Aside from Swanigan and Mitchell's strong efforts in their Las Vegas Summer League debuts, there wasn't much for either team to celebrate.

Portland shot 35.0 percent from the field, while Utah connected at a miserable clip of 31.6 percent.

They turned the ball over a combined 42 times and generally played a sloppy game that lacked much flow.

Both teams will be back at it Sunday with the Blazers facing the Boston Celtics and the Jazz taking on the Los Angeles Clippers.

Raptors 97 (2-0), Timberwolves 72 (0-1)

The Raptors continued their dominant start to the Las Vegas Summer League on Saturday with a convincing 25-point win over the Timberwolves.

Toronto received production throughout the lineup, but its pair of 2016 first-round picks was especially strong.

Forward Pascal Siakam was the team's leading scorer with 17 points. He added four rebounds, one steal and one block.

Siakam was especially proficient at driving to the rim, as seen in this GIF from the Raptors:

Big man Jakob Poeltl also looked dominant with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go with 10 rebounds and a team-best rating of plus-22.

Minnesota had far fewer things to celebrate, although 2016 second-round pick Marcus Paige made an early roster case.

Paige led all scorers with 18 points, which included three makes from downtown.

The former North Carolina star showed a silky shooting stroke, highlighted by this pretty, step-back jumper captured by the T'Wolves' Twitter account:

Unfortunately for the Timberwolves, though, they shot just 32 percent compared to Toronto's 50 percent.

The Raptors will get a day off Sunday, but Minnesota will have a chance to rebound in a meeting with the Denver Nuggets.

Heat 75 (1-0), Spurs 74 (0-1)

The Heat trailed for nearly all of Saturday's game against the Spurs, but they prevailed thanks to a clutch shot from rookie guard London Perrantes.

As seen in the following video courtesy of the Heat's official Twitter account, Perrantes nailed a go-ahead jumper to put Miami up 75-74 with four seconds remaining, which ended up being the final margin:

The undrafted player out of Virginia turned in a solid performance with 12 points, five assists and three steals.

Perrantes was one of four Heat players to reach double figures in scoring, including rookie first-round pick Bam Adebayo, who led the team with 18 points and added 10 rebounds for a double-double.

The Spurs had three players score at least 10 points, but their best showing came from second-year guard Bryan Forbes, who scored a team-high 18 points.

He played a smooth, slippery game throughout, including this tough make captured by the Spurs' Twitter account:

Forbes connected on 43.8 percent of his shots and filled up the stat sheet by adding four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Spurs led by as many as 11 points during the game, but they were unable to put it away when given the opportunity in the fourth quarter.

San Antonio will have a chance to bounce back against the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday, while the Heat will have an off day.

Celtics 86 (1-0), Lakers 81 (0-2)

Two of the top picks in the 2017 NBA draft produced big stat lines Saturday, as the Celtics handed the Lakers their second loss in Las Vegas Summer League play.

Boston had several big outings, but none was better than No. 3 overall pick Jayson Tatum and his team-high 27 points.

Tatum added 11 boards, shot 47.4 percent from the floor and drained his only three-point attempt of the game, which happened to be a buzzer-beater at the end of the third quarter, per the Celtics' Twitter account:

Tatum has made the Celtics look smart thus far for trading out of the No. 1 spot in the draft and landing him with the third pick.

The Lakers, meanwhile, had to like what they saw out of No. 2 overall pick Lonzo Ball, as he bounced back from a brutal performance Friday.

In Saturday's tilt, Ball posted a triple-double with 11 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds. He cemented the line with an emphatic dunk late in the game, courtesy of the Lakers' Twitter account:

Ball wasn't the only Laker to impress, as fellow rookie Kyle Kuzma was the high scorer of the game with 31 points to go along with nine rebounds.

Although the Lakers are off to an 0-2 start, there is a lot to like about the young core they have in place with Ball rebounding, Kuzma flexing his scoring muscle and the likes of Josh Hart and Ivica Zubac contributing as well.

Sunday will be a day of rest for L.A., while the Celtics will look to continue their winning ways against the Blazers.

Cavaliers 95 (2-0), Rockets 90 (1-1)

In a battle of Las Vegas Summer League unbeatens, the Cavaliers came out on top Saturday with a tightly contested 95-90 overtime win.

Neither the Cavs nor Rockets are especially stacked with top-flight, young talent, but both teams performed well in one of the day's best-played games.

Cleveland received a great showing from 2016 second-round pick Kay Felder, who led the team with 16 points and also registered six assists and four rebounds.

Felder dished out several pretty dimes, including this one tweeted by the Cavs' official account:

The Rockets had five players score in double figures Saturday, but none of them out-shined 2016 undrafted player Troy Williams.

Williams was solid in limited action with the Rockets last season, and he carried that over to Saturday's Summer League game with 21 points, four rebounds and two steals.

He played a strong, two-way game that included the following swipe and slam captured by the Rockets' Twitter account:

While Isaiah Taylor tied the game for Houston with 16.6 seconds left in regulation, the Rockets couldn't capitalize, as they mustered just two points in overtime.

Both the Rockets and the Cavaliers will have a day off Sunday after Saturday's hard-fought contest.

76ers 95 (1-0), Warriors 93 (0-1)

The 76ers scored an exciting win over the Warriors on Saturday, but they suffered through a scary moment when No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz left the game due to injury.

Fultz injured his left ankle in the third quarter and didn't return. He was later diagnosed with a sprain, the team announced.

Prior to his exit, Fultz struggled a bit with eight points on 3-of-12 shooting along with two rebounds, one assist and two turnovers.

Anthony Slater of the San Jose Mercury News tweeted a video of Fultz's having difficulty getting off the court following his injury:

The diagnosis is seemingly a positive for the Sixers considering the bad injury luck they have had in recent years with the likes of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

Despite the scary situation, Philadelphia persevered and won the game in dramatic fashion in guard Larry Drew II knocked down the go-ahead bucket with 7.6 seconds remaining:

The Warriors were unable to answer, which allowed the 76ers to salvage what would have otherwise been a disappointing night.

Philadelphia did get production throughout its lineup, while Golden State relied largely on second-year man Patrick McCaw.

McCaw led all scorers with 25 points on 50 percent shooting, and he contributed in multiple areas with four rebounds and two assists as well.

The Sixers and Spurs will clash Sunday, while the Warriors won't be in action.
