Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres has signed a one-year contract extension with the club and will remain with his boyhood outfit until the summer of 2018.

The former Spain international announced his agreement to remain in the Spanish capital for another season after seeing his previous deal at the club come to an end:

Torres returned to Atletico in January 2015, initially on loan before making the move back to his first club permanent last summer.

Admittedly, the 33-year-old's comeback came under something of a gloomy period in his career following disappointing runs at Chelsea and AC Milan, but he's since conjured up some of his older best in Madrid:

The extension means Torres will now play a part in Atletico's maiden season playing in their new home, the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, after departing the Vicente Calderon at the conclusion of the 2015-16 campaign.

It seems fitting that so many of the club's old guard are around to help ease the transition to their new abode.

It also makes sense Atleti would work to keep hold of any talent already present at the club considering they'll be unable to sign any new players this summer as a result of their transfer ban, per BBC Sport.

Torres first joined Los Rojiblancos' academy in 1995 and eventually left their shores for Liverpool in 2007, but Di Marzio's David Amoyal illustrated just how connected the two parties seem as they prolong their relationship:

Antoine Griezmann's contract extension means he'll still be the man to lead manager Diego Simeone's line next season, while Kevin Gameiro and Angel Correa are regarded as the other forward deputies.

Torres may be the seasoned head among that lineup, but he'll hope to keep contributing for his original club as long as he can in the hopes he can finally win major silverware as an Atleti player in what could be his last season at the club.
