Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres is reportedly in "very advanced" talks to join Mexican side Queretaro.

Per ESPN FC's Tom Marshall, Torres' Atleti contract expires this summer, and he's "on the verge" of moving to the Liga MX team, potentially in the coming days. 

Marshall reported the news comes from "multiple sources," with two saying the Spaniard would be handed a two-year deal worth $10 million.

Queretaro are said to be leading the race for Torres ahead of fellow Mexican side Cruz Azul, having been in negotiations with him for three weeks.

Torres has been in something of a decline since leaving Liverpool for Chelsea in 2011, and at 33 he's not getting any younger.

However, he has been somewhat revitalised since rejoining boyhood club Atletico, notching 12 goals in the 2015-16 season and another 10 last season plus seven assists from 21 starts.

As noted by ESPN FC's Samuel Marsden and Goal's Ben Hayward, the striker fittingly signed off in the last match at the Vicente Calderon Stadium with a brace:

Atletico might be wise to offer him a new contract themselves given they can't register new players until January. And considering his love for the club, he'd probably jump at the chance of another year, but from a personal point of view it could make sense for him to join Queretaro.

While Torres has shown he can still chip in for Los Rojiblancos, a move to Mexico would allow him to keep playing at a relatively strong level. Although he might not be up against the same calibre of defences he would face in Spain or the UEFA Champions League, he could still become a potent force again in the twilight of his career.
