Washington Nationals slugger Bryce Harper and San Francisco Giants pitcher Hunter Strickland started throwing punches during Monday's game, but Giants outfielder Michael Morse was the one who suffered an injury.

According to Giants manager Bruce Bochy, Morse suffered a concussion and was placed on the disabled list Tuesday. Morse and Giants pitcher Jeff Samardzija collided during the brawl that ensued after Harper charged the mound when Strickland hit him with a pitch.

San Francisco recalled Kelby Tomlinson to take Morse's roster spot.

"That's the unfortunate thing about these brawls you have," Bochy said about the injury. "Guys are running in and trying to break it up and here he gets hurt trying to break things up, so he's down for a while. ... When you see those two collide, he got caught in the side of the face and jaw area. That's a big man that hit him. I'm not surprised. When you watch that collision, it was pretty violent."

The brawl also led to a four-game suspension for Harper and a six-game suspension for Strickland, per MLB Communications.

Morse's injury was revealed when he underwent concussions tests Tuesday after batting practice.

He is struggling at the dish in the early going this season and slashing .194/.250/.306 with one home run and three RBI in 24 games. His issues are emblematic of the Giants' larger struggles, as the perennial contender is 22-32 and 11.5 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.
