The Kansas City Chiefs made one of the biggest splashes in the 2017 NFL draft by trading up 17 spots to select quarterback Patrick Mahomes 10th overall, though the New York Giants reportedly were also interested in the Texas Tech star.

Per ESPN New York's Anita Marks, the Giants tried to trade up to select Mahomes because head coach Ben McAdoo "loves" him and was "very upset" they weren't able to land him. 

The Giants had the 23rd pick in the first round and wound up selecting Mississippi tight end Evan Engram to boost their passing game. 

The Chiefs paid a steep price to make their move for Mahomes, swapping first-round picks with the Buffalo Bills and sending their third-rounder (91st overall) and a first-round pick in 2018 to the Bills. 

Even though Eli Manning is entrenched as New York's starting quarterback for 2017, he's 36 years old and his 6.7 yards per attempt last season were his worst since 2007. 

The Giants could still address the quarterback position at some point in this year's draft, but Mahomes is the one that got away.
