Martellus Bennett Helps Buy, Designs Championship Rings for Chicago High School

Martellus Bennett chipped in to help purchase championship rings for a Chicago high school basketball team that couldn't afford them.

Morgan Park won the boys Class 3A state title in March, but neither the school nor Chicago Public Schools had the funds to commemorate the achievement. According to Michael O'Brien of the Chicago Sun-Times, comedian and Chicago native Hannibal Burress sent the program a check.

Bennett, a former Chicago Bear who signed with the rival Green Bay Packers this offseason, also offered assistance. As Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin told O'Brien, the NFL tight end delivered the news to the team.

"I put him up on the big screen and let him tell the kids," Irvin said. "They knew who he was right away and got really excited. They were so happy; it was great to see their reaction. That is a blessing right there."

Bennett went beyond donating money, as he explained in an Instagram post that showcased the finished product.

"I'm proud to say that 2017 Morgan Park High School Basketball team will be receiving their championship rings," Bennett wrote. "This was my first time designing jewelry but I gave it my best shot."
