Mike Glennon Compared to Matt Ryan by Buccaneers Coach Dirk Koetter

Adam Wells

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Dirk Koetter is such a big fan of Mike Glennon that he compared him favorably to 2016 NFL MVP Matt Ryan.

Glennon, Koetter's former backup quarterback in Tampa Bay, signed with the Chicago Bears as a free agent March 10.

Koetter made his comments about Glennon at the NFL owners meetings, per ESPN's Jeff Dickerson:

(The Bears are) getting a very accurate passer, they’re getting an excellent leader, a guy that will be a relentless, tireless worker. He’ll set the standard for how to work for their team. I compare (Glennon) favorably with (Ryan), and I’ve coached them both. I think they have a similar skill set. Now, Matt’s been a starter since the first day he came into the league and had a lot of success and Mike hasn’t maybe gotten as many opportunities, but I think style of play, I think they have a similar style.

Koetter spent two years with Glennon in Tampa Bay, first as an offensive coordinator in 2015 before getting promoted to head coach last season.

Prior to working with the Buccaneers, Koetter spent three seasons as the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator. Ryan threw for 13,928 yards, 86 touchdowns and 45 interceptions under Koetter from 2012-14, leading the NFL in completion percentage (68.6) in 2012.

Ryan was already an established player before Koetter arrived in Atlanta after being drafted in 2007. He was named NFL Rookie of the Year and made one Pro Bowl appearance in 2010.

The Bears will provide Glennon with his first starting opportunity since he was a rookie with the Buccaneers in 2013. He played solid football in 13 games that season with 2,608 yards, 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
