P.J. Tucker Traded to Raptors; Jared Sullinger and Draft Picks Sent to Suns

Mike Chiari

The Phoenix Suns parted ways with forward P.J. Tucker after parts of five seasons Thursday, as they traded him to the Toronto Raptors, the Raptors announced

Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical first reported the news.

Phoenix will receive forward Jared Sullinger and two second-round picks in return. Gavin Schall of the Pac 12 Network detailed how Tucker reacted to the news:

The 31-year-old veteran has been a key part of Phoenix's rotation in recent years. He served primarily as a starter from 2012-13 through 2015-16 but has transitioned to a bench role in 2016-17.

Even so, Tucker is still averaging 28.5 minutes per game this season and is putting up 7.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest.

The former University of Texas standout has had a unique career that saw him get selected with the No. 35 overall pick by the Raptors in the 2006 NBA draft.

He appeared in 17 games for the Raptors as a rookie before getting waived and primarily playing overseas until signing with the Suns in 2012.

Tucker isn't a flashy player, but he is rugged, tenacious and works hard on the defensive end of the floor. He has also proven capable of defending multiple positions at a stout 6'6" and 245 lbs.

His durability is a major selling point as well, since the Raleigh, North Carolina, native missed a total of just eight games in four seasons with the Suns entering 2016-17.

Tucker's best statistical season came in 2013-14 when he averaged 9.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in 81 starts, but much of his value doesn't necessarily show up in the box score.

He is a true grinder and leader on the floor, and while he was a good fit in Phoenix due to its young core, the Suns likely made a wise move by trading him away.

Tucker is set to become a free agent during the offseason, which could have led to him departing without the Suns getting anything back in return.

Teams are constantly on the lookout for consistent players who can eat up minutes, and that is precisely what Tucker has developed into.

Toronto is fourth in the Eastern Conference standings currently, but it has brought in some strong reinforcements lately, as it recently acquired Serge Ibaka from the Orlando Magic as well.

The Raptors had little depth to speak of on the wing behind starting small forward DeMarre Carroll, but Tucker changes that.

Toronto sent its primary backup in Terrence Ross to Orlando as part of the Ibaka deal, but Tucker is a capable replacement who brings more defensive responsibility to the table.

In Sullinger, the Suns get a player who has appeared in just 11 games this season due to a foot injury and is averaging 3.4 points and 2.5 rebounds per contest.

He spent the first four years of his career with the Boston Celtics after getting selected in the first round of the draft out of Ohio State and put up 11.1 points and 7.7 boards per game during his time with the C's.
