Patriots Need Bennett Healthy for Postseason After Gronkowski's Injury

In his first season in New England, Bennett fit in well next to fellow tight end Rob Gronkowski with 42 receptions for 540 yards and four touchdowns, including the first three-touchdown game of his career in Week 5.

Quarterback Tom Brady spoke to reporters about Bennett's importance in November:

He's been so productive for us and I really enjoy playing with him. You talk about a guy that's been out at practice every day. I mean, he's fought through a lot of stuff over the course of the year to be out there, trying to get better and improve. I think it shows a lot of mental toughness but it's showing up with his ability to produce on the field.

But Bennett's production will be more vital for the Patriots offense after the team announced it placed Gronkowski on the injured reserve list Saturday because of a back injury that required season-ending surgery.

If Bennett is limited or forced to the sidelines in the future, the Patriots would have to resort to rookie Matt Lengel as their starting tight end. Lengel, who has appeared in just one game this season, has not been targeted.
