College basketball has a new No. 1 team.

Fresh off waxing Michigan State and watching top-ranked Duke fall, Kentucky ascended to the top spot in the latest Associated Press rankings Monday. Kentucky is followed by defending champion Villanova, Indiana, North Carolina and Kansas in the remainder of the Top Five.

Here is a look at how the rankings played out:

Duke's 77-75 loss to Kansas dropped the Blue Devils five spots, but the defeat was understandable. The Blue Devils remain short-handed with star freshmen Jayson Tatum, Harry Giles and Marques Bolden out with injuries. Just seven players received playing time against the Jayhawks, and Javin DeLaurier saw only a minute of action.

A full-strength Kansas team got 21 points from Frank Mason III and 15 from freshman Josh Jackson in 18 minutes. The Jayhawks opened their season with a loss to Indiana, and they narrowly avoided a disappointing 0-2 start.

"They're going to be one of the best teams in the country throughout the whole year," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski told reporters. "It was a heck of a game. They're really good."

Duke responded with 10-point wins over Penn State and No. 23 Rhode Island over the weekend. The Blue Devils have another pair of tune-up games against William & Mary and Appalachian State this week before a showdown with Michigan State on Nov. 29.

Oregon moved back nine spots to No. 13 after a blowout loss at Baylor. The Ducks' high-powered offense shot just 32.8 percent, including a 3-of-21 mark from beyond the arc, as Baylor launched itself into the national conversation with a 66-49 win. The Bears got 18 points and seven assists from Manu Lecomte, and Johnathan Motley put up 17 points and seven boards.

Oregon was playing without forward Dillon Brooks, who has missed the season's first three games with a foot injury.

"Didn't play very well, and didn't make plays for each other, so we've got a tremendous amount of work to do," Oregon coach Dana Altman said, per Stephen Hawkins of the AP (via the Charlotte Observer). "It's difficult [without Brooks], but that's the way it goes. ... There's no doubt he's a good player, but we've got some other good players that didn't play very well."

Baylor moved up to No. 20 on the strength of beating Oregon and a 3-0 start.

There were precious few other major results of the week. Kentucky continued its hot start by beating Michigan State, and Creighton unseated Wisconsin, but those were not unexpected results. Creighton is likely an underdog against Wisconsin on a neutral floor, but it earned a strong 79-67 win while playing on its home floor.

"You could argue it might be the best win we've had since I've been here when you consider where we're trying to get the program back to, where the Wisconsin program is today, and in the manner that we did it," Bluejays coach Greg McDermott said, per the AP (via ESPN.com).

John Calipari's red-hot Wildcats continued their run to the country's top spot by dominating Michigan State on both ends of the floor. Kentucky forced 20 turnovers and held the Spartans to just 32.8 percent shooting in the 69-48 romp.

Michigan State, which also lost its season opener to Arizona, rebounded with wins over Mississippi Valley State and Florida Gulf Coast. While the Spartans didn't look impressive in that latter game—they won by just one point—their two-game winning streak was enough to keep them in the rankings. Their 13-spot drop is the biggest of the week.

Purdue suffered a three-point loss to Villanova, which isn't a win but is decent proof the Boilermakers can compete with the nation's elite. Oregon was the only Top 25 team to lose to an unranked opponent; every other loss among teams ranked last week can essentially be chalked up as a resume-builder.

Baylor's ascent helped push Cincinnati and California out of the rankings. The Golden Bears have not lost a game this season but are 2-0 against a weak slate.

Florida State and Michigan rode identical 4-0 starts to tie for the No. 25 ranking and enter the poll.
