Chelsea Transfer News: Cesc Fabregas Linked with Fenerbahce, Fresh Blues Rumours

Chris Laker

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas is reportedly a transfer target for Turkish club Fenerbahce.

Fabregas appears to have fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge and has started just one Premier League match for Antonio Conte's side this season.

The Turkish outfit have struggled at the start of the season and view the former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder as the kind of marquee signing needed to invigorate their side, according to Nizaar Kinsella for Goal.

Per the report, Fenerbahce "could offer the midfielder a loan move with the option to buy at the end of the season, though AC Milan remain interested in him."

If Fabregas did decide to make the switch to Turkey, the player would become one of the league's highest earners, Kinsella added.

Chelsea manager Conte has sought to put his stamp on the team since his arrival in the summer and has preferred to deploy Oscar and Nemanja Matic alongside N'Golo Kante at the heart of midfield.

Form and fitness seem to have deserted Fabregas, and he is no longer the player he was when he first moved back to London from Barcelona in 2014.

Like many players, the Spain international struggled during the dying embers of Jose Mourinho's reign. At 29 years old, he should arguably be at the peak of his powers, but Fabregas' star is on the wane as he has fallen foul of the new regime at the Bridge.

The January transfer window could be the ideal time for Conte to cash in and use the money received on further strengthening the defensive options in his Chelsea squad.

Despite missing Sunday's 4-0 win over Manchester United through injury, there looks to be little room for Fabregas as a regular in the Chelsea starting lineup.

And since Conte switched to a 3-5-2 formation in a bid to shore Chelsea up after their 3-0 loss to Arsenal, the Matic-Kante defensive pairing has helped the Blues to clean sheets in their last two Premier League matches.

The Italian would be loath to chop and change to get Fabregas back in, and he will more likely be keen to settle on his side to allow a consistency to develop among his players.

As Dave Fraser of the Sun noted, strict disciplinarian Conte has been less than impressed with Fabregas' approach, with the former Juventus coach making it apparent his time at Stamford Bridge is drawing to a close.

"The Italian is a big fan of players working hard—in both attack and defence—and it’s believed Conte thinks Fabregas is too lazy to fit in his system," Fraser wrote.

Fenerbahce's reported interest comes at an opportune time for Chelsea, who are desperate to put themselves back at the top of the English game.

If Fabregas continues to miss out on a starting place, it's likely he'll be shipped out at the next available opportunity.
