The New Day continued the longest Raw Tag Team Championship reign in WWE history Sunday night at Clash of Champions by beating Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson in a pivotal title match.

Xavier Woods hit Anderson with Francesca, the trombone he carries to ringside. That allowed Big E and Kofi Kingston to deliver Midnight Hour and secure the pinfall.

Gallows and Anderson earned another shot at the straps after their bout against The New Day at SummerSlam on Aug. 21, when Big E returned from an injury he suffered at the hands of the former Club members to cause a disqualification.

Although Kofi and Xavier retained the tag titles by virtue of the DQ, Gallows and Anderson won the match and continued their pursuit of the Raw Tag Team Championship in the following weeks.

In an effort to show they meant business the following night, Gallows and Anderson interrupted The Dudley Boyz's farewell by attacking them on their final night as members of the WWE roster.

After that, Gallows and Anderson became obsessed with sending The New Day off to an early retirement. They even resorted to presenting the WWE Universe with a future version of The New Day called "The Old Day":

Woods, Kofi and Big E didn't take kindly to the spoof, as they attacked The Old Day and made it clear they weren't entertained by Gallows and Anderson's antics.

The New Day have a penchant for entertaining the fans in every segment, and Woods didn't take kindly to Gallows and Anderson failing to live up to those standards, as WWE Universe shared:

In the weeks leading up to Clash of Champions, however, Gallows and Anderson dropped the comedy act in favor of doing what they do best: beating people up.

The former IWGP tag team champs defeated Woods and Kingston in a non-title match on Raw and had a ton of momentum on their side ahead of the championship encounter.

Despite that, The New Day rose to the occasion on the pay-per-view stage once again and managed to preserve their title run, which has already eclipsed one year.

While putting the titles on Gallows and Anderson with The New Day attempting to regain them could have made for an intriguing storyline, The New Day have added so much prestige to the championship that it's difficult to argue with the decision to keep them at the pinnacle of the tag team division.
