Meanwhile, China's Yiwen Sun took the bronze medal after beating French competitor Lauren Rembi in a close encounter.

Recap

Sato sprung a pair of notable surprises. The first came in the round of 32 against Russia's Tatyana Logunova, but her performance in the next round was even more impressive, as Sato soon saw off defending the Olympic champion.

Yet her run emphatically came to an end at the quarterfinal stage, where Szasz won by 11 points. A top-10 performer in the FIE, Szasz ended the opening period in a commanding position, and Sato couldn't recover.

However, things didn't go as well on the piste for American pair Courtney and Kelley Hurley. Both were beaten in the round of 32, with Courtney falling to Shemyakina. The latter went on the attack during the third period after trailing by two touches.

Nathalie Moellhausen of host nation Brazil sent Kelley Hurley packing. The American's debut in the individual event didn't go to plan, as she routinely found herself picked off by a more assured and experienced opponent.

One round later, Moellhausen faced a tougher challenge in the form of France's Marie-Florence Candassamy. The FIE's official Twitter account aptly described the encounter that put the Brazilian into the last eight:

China's Sun was pushed into overtime by Tunisia's Sarra Besbes in their tense quarterfinal but kept her focus to survive the extra period and progress. She couldn't beat Fiamingo in a semifinal that went into overtime but did earn the consolation of a bronze medal after some deft defensive work and quick strikes caught the attack-minded Rembi off-guard.

Fiamingo built a seemingly unassailable 10-6 lead over Szasz in the final. Yet a brave comeback from the Hungarian made things close, with the score tied 12-12 at one point, before Szasz managed to move two clear and hold on for the win.

Claiming silver may not prove to be much consolation for Rossella after she lost from such a strong position, although it's Italy's first medal at the 2016 Games. However, the plaudits rightfully go to Szasz after the way she turned things around.
