The Philadelphia 76ers have acquired Sasha Kaun and cash considerations from the Cleveland Cavaliers for the rights to Chukwudiebere Maduabum, the Cavaliers announced.

Kaun appeared in 25 games for the Cavaliers last season, averaging 3.8 minutes and 0.9 points per game. 

He shouldn't expect to stay in Philadelphia for long, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical:

Entering Friday, the 76ers had $68.8 million of total active contracts, which is almost $16 million under the salary cap, per Spotrac. 

Wojnarowski also added that the Cavaliers traded Kaun to clear space to sign big man Chris Andersen, who was LeBron James' teammate with the Miami Heat from 2012-2014. 

Per Spotrac, Kaun was projected to make $1.3 million in 2016-17 and $1.6 million in 2017-18. 

Before his short stint in Cleveland, Kaun played his college basketball at Kansas, winning the national championship in 2008. But he went back to Russia after being drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics 56th overall that same year. 

The 31-year-old center spent six seasons from 2008-2015 playing with CSKA Moscow in the Euroleague, where he averaged 7.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game while shooting 70.2 percent from the floor.

Now with Kaun expected to hit the waiver wire, teams around the league looking for a depth signing to add some size to their rotation could take a look at the 6'11" Russian. 

Maduabum, who is headed to Cleveland, hasn't played a single game in the NBA since being drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2011. Splitting time between Europe and the United States, the 6'9" forward played eight games in the D-League over three seasons. 

So given these two players' history, it's clear that finances were the main reason why this deal was made on Friday.
