Fernando Torres, Atletico Madrid Agree on New Contract: Latest Details, Reaction

Gianni Verschueren

Atletico Madrid and star forward Fernando Torres have agreed to a new one-year contract, ensuring the Spain international will continue his career with Los Rojiblancos.

The club confirmed the news on Monday and included a quote from the striker:

I'm delighted to continue at home, the only place where I ever wanted to be, and it has finally come true.

Happy to be here, I've never had doubts about where I wanted to be during all this process in which we didn't know what was going to happen and, in the end, what matters is that I have achieved what I was waiting for.

Torres' contract was set to expire at the end of this season, as was his loan deal, as he spent the last two seasons under contract with AC Milan. The former Chelsea and Liverpool star seemed destined to leave for Major League Soccer in America or the Chinese Super League, but after a solid 2015-16 campaign in La Liga, an extension became an option.

The 32-year-old had become something of a punchline before returning to Madrid, as his scoring output and performances in general fell drastically after his move to Stamford Bridge from Liverpool. He struggled in Milan as well, and his first six months with Atletico yielded just three Liga goals, per WhoScored.com.

With Jackson Martinez joining Los Rojiblancos last summer, Torres' time as a top forward at a big club appeared to be over, but the Colombian never adapted to the side, and the Spain international proved to be the perfect partner for Antoine Griezmann in manager Diego Simeone's 4-4-2 system.

Here's a look at some of Torres' highlights from the 2015-16 campaign:

Star youngsters Angel Correa and Luciano Vietto are the future of Atletico in the attacking third, but both proved they aren't ready to lead the team after average campaigns in 2015-16, while Torres performed admirably.

A contract extension is a logical result, giving Vietto and Correa more time to grow and keeping the fantastic duo of Griezmann and Torres together for now.

The Spaniard has rediscovered his best form at the club where his career began—it makes sense for him to stay at the Estadio Vicente Calderon for as long as possible.
