Atletico Madrid vs. Granada: Winners and Losers from La Liga

Rik Sharma

Atletico Madrid beat Granada 3-0 at the Vicente Calderon to go level on points with Barcelona at the top of La Liga.

The Catalans played later in the day and lost against Valencia, meaning the teams both have 75 points, although Barcelona lead on head-to-head records.

Koke, Fernando Torres and Angel Correa did the damage for Los Rojiblancos in their comfortable victory. Here are the winners and losers from the game...

Winner: Koke

Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke has had a dramatic change in fortunes in January.

In the first half of the season he struggled for form, but since he scored against Barcelona at Camp Nou, he has been on the rise.

Atletico lost that game, but bar against Sporting Gijon, they have not been defeated since.

A large part of that is down to Koke's contribution. He set up a goal for Torres after scoring the first himself, drilling home low after the ball broke to him in the box.

Koke has more assists than any other La Liga player, with 13, and also has five goals to boot.

His surge in form is coming at the perfect time, as Atletico aim for the double, and ahead of Euro 2016 too.

Loser: Jose Gonzalez

Granada are in the thick of a relegation battle now. They have 30 points, with Sporting Gijon on 29.

Levante and Getafe are on 28 each underneath them. Ahead of them are Rayo Vallecano on 34 points.

The last time they won was on March 3, against Sporting. Since then they have lost to Betis and drawn with Espanyol, Rayo, Athletic Club and Malaga.

Manager Jose Gonzalez, who took over on February 22, hasn't been able to drive the team onwards.

Two victories in his first two games was a great start, but since then it's been downhill.

Atletico were superior in every department, although if Ruben Rochina's shot had gone in instead of striking the post, things perhaps might have been different here.

Winner: Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres is back. No, he actually might be.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea striker is finally playing well, scoring in four consecutive games for the first time since he accomplished it in 2004, while playing for the Merseyside club.

Under Diego Simeone and at his boyhood side, Torres is finally looking happier again.

Even when he was sent off against Barcelona, things ended up going his way, with the team making it through in the Champions League to the semi-finals.

Torres is out of contract with AC Milan at the end of the season, and his loan spell with Atletico ends too.

But if he can keep scoring at the same rate, five in his last seven games, he will certainly be offered a new deal at the Vicente Calderon.

Loser: Antoine Griezmann

The Atletico Madrid forward had scored in his previous seven league games before this one.

He is in spectacular form now, after suffering a down spell at the start of the year.

When Griezmann scored against Real Madrid to win Atletico the derby at the Santiago Bernabeu, he set himself on a run.

Goals against Real Sociedad, Valencia, Deportivo de la Coruna, Sporting Gijon, Real Betis and Espanyol followed.

He also notched both goals that knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League on Wednesday night, helping Atletico reach the semi-finals.

However, he could not find the net against Granada and equal the record of Diego Forlan of eight games in a row.

Griezmann didn't have his best day and was taken off, although more to give him a rest for the challenges ahead than because he was playing badly.

It speaks volumes about how well regarded he is these days that we are disappointed when he doesn't score in a game.

Winner: Diego Simeone

"Qualified for the next Champions League. Objective complete," tweeted Diego Simeone after Barcelona had lost to Valencia at Camp Nou.

It was a slice of classic Simeone. He loves nothing more than playing down expectations, of making Atletico seem like the minnows who are somehow at the top, fighting with the big dogs.

There is some truth in that, with Los Rojiblancos not having the cleft of Barcelona or Madrid, but the trick should have worn off by now. We know how dangerous his team are.

Having knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League, they have now joined their perch in La Liga. It's game on.
