Floyd Mayweather Says Boxing Wants Him to Return, Comments on Promoting MMA

Timothy Rapp

In an interview with FightHype.com, former boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. said that the sport of boxing misses him and revealed that his next venture would be the sport of MMA.

"They want me back," Mayweather said of boxing before turning his focus to a different sport. "It's time for me to move on to MMA. It's time for me to start promoting fights for the MMA."

Mayweather also lauded his own "smart investments" and noted that "every month, the check comes in."

If nothing else, retirement hasn't stymied Mayweather's proclivity for self-promotion.

Mayweather, 39, retired in September 2015 after finishing his boxing career undefeated with a 49-0 record.

He became known in the ring for his speed, pinpoint punching and his legendary defense, beating his opponents with technical prowess rather than raw power. He became known out of the ring for being brash and self-aggrandizing, making him one of the sport's most polarizing figures.

That combination made his fights intriguing and ultimately lucrative, especially later in his career, when he earned upward of $220 million for his fight against Manny Pacquiao in May 2015, per Darren Rovell and Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. Staging such enormous fights became a central tenet of the legacy Mayweather built for himself.

His interest in MMA, then, is not terribly surprising. Mayweather already owns his own promotional company, Mayweather Promotions, and the success of the UFC has made MMA arguably more relevant in the United States than boxing, especially with superstars like Mayweather and Pacquiao no longer in the sport.

In the fighting game, the future money appears to be in MMA. And the man aptly nicknamed Money is always likely to follow the greenest trail.
