Floyd Mayweather Talks Potential Medical Marijuana Project and Life After Boxing

Tim Daniels

While Floyd Mayweather Jr. understands his status as a high-profile former athlete makes him a popular target, he's content with his life after boxing, which features a number of different ventures.

Ben Thompson of FightHype.com sat down for an interview with the longtime superstar, who walked away from the ring after a victory over Andre Berto in September. Money discussed all of the outside noise and his desire to just focus on his family at this stage of his life:

Everyone takes shots at Floyd Mayweather...from mixed martial arts to NBA players to rappers...I just want to help my family, live my life, and just do me and stay in my own lane...my lane is, of course, the 9-figure lane...I'm working on so many different things...I have well over a billion dollars in property...I've done some smart things with my money...we can't put all our eggs in one basket.

He also talked about some of his current projects, including plenty of real estate holdings and looking into the field of medical marijuana:

Although it's difficult to call any retirement in the world of boxing final, especially with Mayweather changing his mind a few times before, he didn't sound like an athlete planning a comeback anytime soon. Whether he'll remain satisfied with his life outside the ring is the question mark.

Dan Rafael of ESPN.com noted last Saturday that Adrien Broner called out the 49-0 star after a victory last week. He talked about having a "feud" with the pound-for-pound king and wanting to face off.

"I'm a man, at the end of the day, and I come from the streets, from the bottom," Broner said. "I come from nothing, and I will never let a man disrespect me. He got to come see me. We got to get it on."

Other boxers know the type of mainstream draw Mayweather is, so Broner probably won't be the last one to call out the retired five-division world champion. Money hasn't taken any of the bait yet.

Instead, it sounds like he's staying busy with a vast array of projects involving his family. He certainly doesn't have a major financial reason to make a comeback with Celebrity Net Worth estimating his wealth at around $400 million.

So even though the phrase "never say never" is certainly apropos in the boxing world, Mayweather sounds content to maintain the retired label—at least for the time being.
