Diego Simeone Talks Luis Suarez, Fernando Torres After Barcelona Beat Atletico

Gianni Verschueren

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone backed forward Fernando Torres after he got sent off during the 2-1 UEFA Champions League loss against Barcelona on Tuesday and said he couldn't speak his mind regarding the performance of the official or the multiple controversies surrounding Luis Suarez.

As shared by Ed Malyon of the Daily Mirror, he tried his best to watch his words to avoid getting in trouble:

Torres gave the visitors the lead early at the Camp Nou before he got sent off for two bookable offences within 10 minutes of each other. Atletico stood firm until half-time, but Barcelona pushed hard up the pitch in the second half and turned defeat into victory through a brace from Luis Suarez.

Torres' dismissal ultimately proved Atletico's downfall, as the Rojiblanco lacked a deep threat they could use on the counter-attack after half-time, and Barcelona could afford to send more players into the box and relax defensively.

But Simeone told reporters he wasn't angry with the veteran:

Per ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan, he left it up to “others” to decide whether Torres' dismissal was the right call:

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique thought Torres completely deserved both yellow cards:

But the controversy didn't stop there. Suarez, who scored both goals to hand the Catalans the win, was involved in several controversial incidents that could have led to a dismissal as well.

First, he was caught kicking out at Juanfran while the ball had long been cleared. Here's a look at the incident, thanks to gonxo0o:

Not only was Suarez allowed to continue―the official didn't even caution him.

In the second half, he was involved in a shoving match with full-back Filipe Luis, raising his hands to the Brazilian's face, and he received a yellow as a result.

When Simeone was asked about the two incidents, he told reporters he saw more than two:

But similar to Torres' sending off, the Atletico manager refused to comment directly on Suarez or the two incidents. Luis, who was involved in one of the incidents, was less diplomatic:

The second leg of this tie will be at the Estadio Vicente Calderon in Madrid next week, and thanks to Torres' away goal, the Rojiblanco would advance to the semi-finals with a simple 1-0 win.

The former Liverpool man won't be part of the squad because of his dismissal, but despite the setbacks Atletico suffered on Tuesday, Simeone's men are very much alive in this tie.
