Paraguay vs. Brazil: Score and Twitter Reaction for 2018 World Cup Qualifying

Daniel Kramer

Brazil rebounded in the final 13 minutes to score a pair of goals and finish with a 2-2 draw against host Paraguay in CONMEBOL 2018 World Cup qualifying action on Tuesday at Estadio Defensores del Chaco.

Dani Alves nailed the equalizer in the 92nd minute with a sniper shot between two defenders that narrowly got by outstretched goalkeeper Justo Villar, via TyC Sports Play:

The crowd went wild. Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated noted even beIN Sports commentator Ray Hudson got caught up in the action:

Alves nearly got in another goal a little more than a minute later from far outside the box, missing on the outer corner of the net on a great save by Villar, via TyC Sports Play:

OptaJavier shared context for how much of an impact Alves has played during Brazil’s World Cup qualifying efforts:

Ricardo Oliveira scored Brazil’s first goal in the 79th minute on a rebound from a great save by Villar on an attempt by Hulk from far out. Oliveira was able to swiftly slip the ball by under Villar’s outstretched arm as the 'keeper was going to the ground to make the save.

Just after the score, Wahl urged followers to tune in to the match during halftime of the critical USA-Guatemala duel—and rightfully so:

All evening, Brazil seemed just a step behind but on the cusp of breaking out. It retained possession for 65 percent of the match and outshot Paraguay 17-12, with eight shots on goal to Paraguay's three. More telling, Paraguay had six saves throughout the match.

The score was even at nil-nil nearly to the half before Edgar Benitez finally got things going with a goal in the 40th minute from the center of the box to take a 1-0 lead.

Out of the break, Dario Lezcano gave Paraguay what seemed to be a comfortable cushion at 2-0 with another goal from the center of the box.

Brazil crept its way back and had a few close calls, notably when Oliveira was tripped up by Pablo Aguilar inside the box just before getting a shot off in the 72nd minute. The play manifested on an incredible pass delivered by Lucas Lima from well up the field.

The Brazilians have to feel good with Tuesday’s outcome given they were without their best player, Neymar, who was suspended for after drawing a yellow card in their match Friday against Uruguay.

With the draw, both clubs picked up one point each in the CONMEBOL standings and now sit tied for fourth in the middle of the pack with nine points each.

There’s still plenty of soccer to be played in the qualifying season, and CONMEBOL will take a five-month hiatus after Tuesday before resuming in late August.

With seven of the 10 competing teams separated by just four points, it appears the battle to get to Russia among the South American clubs will be intense all the way.
