3 Players Who Are Fighting for Their Atletico Madrid Futures

Rik Sharma

Diego Simeone runs a tight ship at Atletico Madrid. The Rojiblancos coach has a core to the side he rarely changes, plus a few players who can come in when needed.

Jan Oblak, Juanfran, Diego Godin, Jose Gimenez, Felipe Luis, Gabi, Koke, Saul Niguez, Tiago Mendes and Antoine Griezmann are the players he trusts most.

Then come Yannick Carrasco and Augusto Fernandez before the rest of the squad.

Of the rest, some are fairly new, such as Matias Kranevitter, some are young, such as Thomas Partey, and some just haven't been able to play consistently well enough to force their way into regular contention.

The following are the three players, from the squad of 24, who are playing for their futures at the club over the rest of the season.

Simeone has played Luciano Vietto 26 times this season, although 11 of those appearances have been from the bench.

It's been more through a lack of other options than any sterling work by his compatriot.

The Argentinian has only score three times all season, adding four assists.

It's been quite rare for him to play well for a 90-minute period.

Despite not being close to recapturing his Villarreal form from last season, it would still be surprising if Atletico let him go in the summer.

At just 22, Vietto has a lot of potential he can build upon, and Simeone is the right man to try and coax better displays out of him.

However, Atletico showed that should the right offer come along, they will let a player go. Jackson Martinez only signed last summer but was sent packing to China when a big offer arrived from Guangzhou Evergrande.

If the opportunity comes around to sign a top striker and Atletico needed to part with Vietto in exchange or to raise funds, based on his form so far this season, they would do it.

Fernando Torres

This is the clearest-cut case. Fernando Torres' loan deal expires in the summer and so does his contract with AC Milan.

That means Atletico are free to give him a contract in July, provided their FIFA transfer ban does not kick in.

However, Torres is going to have to earn it. At 32, unless he's playing well, there's no reason for Atletico to offer him a deal beyond sentimentality.

He has five goals in 31 appearances this season, but the good news is three of those have come in his last eight games.

If he can continue finding the net as the season enters its home straight, it will be food for thought where a new contract is concerned.

It hasn’t been the easiest season for Oliver Torres, either.

The midfielder, 21, has played in 29 games, but 17 of those appearances have come from the substitutes' bench.

When he does start, he’s usually taken off around the 60-minute mark. He has not completed the full 90 minutes in La Liga and only once in the UEFA Champions League this season.

One goal and two assists is not a good haul for an attacking midfielder, and Simeone isn’t always thrilled with his defensive work rate, either.

The midfielder is a talented player with superb passing and vision, but his type of game isn’t always valued or particularly useful in Atletico’s system.

According to Calciomercato, citing reports in Spanish newspapers, AC Milan want to bring the star to Italy and hope to take advantage of the good relationship between the two clubs to make that happen.

AS writer Manolete said Torres’ dream is to gain the confidence of Simeone, though getting to play more games with another team and finding his best form may help.
