Getafe vs. Atletico Madrid: Winners and Losers from La Liga

Rik Sharma

Technically, this was a Madrid derby, but there was nothing spicy about it, as less than 9,000 fans at Getafe's Coliseum Alfonso Perez watched on, with about 100 from Atletico.

The small visiting group would not have been surprised by what they saw: a solid and unspectacular 1-0 away win.

Fernando Torres struck the winner right at the start of the game, and after that Atletico Madrid never really looked like letting things slip.

Here are the winners and losers from Sunday's game.

Loser: Yannick Ferreira Carrasco

Belgian winger Yannick Ferreira Carrasco didn't have a bad game, but he did suffer some bad luck.

With a brilliant low cross that split the defence and goalkeeper, he set up the game's only goal for Fernando Torres.

Beyond that he was lively, if not as efficient as usual, until he suffered an unfortunate injury.

As he blocked Damian Suarez's cross, he fell painfully on his ankle. The club confirmed on Twitter during the second half he has sprained ankle ligaments, per Goal.com.

Atletico have some huge games coming up. They play high-flying Villarreal at home on Sunday, before heading to Holland to face PSV in the Champions League in midweek.

That is followed up by a trip to the Santiago Bernabeu to face Real Madrid in the capital derby, a game that could potentially define their hopes of challenging Barcelona for the title.

Atletico will be hoping the more thorough medical tests and diagnosis are good. Carrasco is a key figure.

Winner: Fernando Torres

Goals are coming like London buses for Fernando Torres.

He ended his 22-game drought by scoring against Eibar, and he did it again against Getafe.

This was the first time he has scored in consecutive matches since October 2013 at club level, and a crucial goal it was, sending Atletico above Real Madrid and back into second place in the table.

The news coming out of Atletico a few weeks ago looked bad for Torres, with Diego Simeone thinking about sending him to Room 101 and not signing him, per Goal.com.

But now Torres has goal 101 in an Atletico shirt, and if he keeps on popping up at crucial moments, the club may decide to offer him a deal after all in the summer.

That is, if they are allowed to sign players thanks to their FIFA transfer ban, which is currently suspended.

Loser: Fran Escriba

Fran Escriba is not normally a "loser," but this was Getafe's fourth defeat in a row. They are in danger of being sucked into the relegation battle.

The 50-year-old coach has done a good job with the small team south of Madrid, and you would imagine he will inspire his squad to steer clear of the drop.

There are worse teams in La Liga than Getafe, and there are definitely worse coaches. But Getafe, despite being at home, created little trouble for Atletico Madrid.

Santiago Vergini had one effort that went wide after a good cross from Victor Rodriguez, while the provider could have had a penalty after Gabi's challenge.

Winner: Jan Oblak

Jan Oblak signed a new contract until 2021 in midweek and celebrated it in the perfect way. With a clean sheet.

The Slovenian goalkeeper has become one of the finest stoppers in the world under Diego Simeone, keeping 15 clean sheets in 24 La Liga matches this season. In that time he has conceded just 11 goals.

It was one of the more uneventful afternoons for him, but he's used to that given the proficiency of the defenders in front of him.

Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez are a Uruguayan rock wall in front of him; it must be a treat for the goalkeeper to play behind such an obstinate pair of defenders.

Loser: Angel Correa

Angel Correa has so much talent, but thus far he's failed to harness it consistently.

There is a need in this Atletico team for a forward who can play beside Antoine Griezmann. Nobody has shown he is worthy of filling it.

Correa, who came on as a substitute here, will have angered Diego Simeone with what he did as the game was heading toward the end.

Atletico were one goal up when he wasted a great chance to get the second, sent through on goal.

He didn't move decisively enough and then should have been selfish, but instead he looked for a pass to Saul, even though there was a defender in between.

Juan Rodriguez cut the ball out, and the chance was gone. It didn't matter in the end, but it was a black mark against the forward when it comes to future opportunities.
