10 Players Who Will Not Move on 2016 January Transfer Deadline Day

Mark Jones

It's transfer deadline day on Monday, and while for many that means monitoring airports, training grounds and club car parks for any movement, the whole thing invariably ends up being something of an anticlimax.

Transfers are often difficult things to complete, especially when there is a time limit on finalising them, so a good number of deals end up falling short or being delayed until the summer.

Here are 10 men who, despite rumours to the contrary, you are unlikely to see holding up a new shirt on Monday.

Why won't he move? It's just too big a deal to complete.

The omnipresence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Paris Saint-Germain is clearly something that has started to get on Edinson Cavani's nerves, and he probably needs to move if he is to get a regular run of games in the central position he craves.

The move should come in the summer, though, and it wouldn't be a surprise if clubs other than Manchester United joined the race for the Uruguayan.

Why won't he move? He's too expensive.

As detailed in the BBC Sport report above, Liverpool approached Shakhtar Donetsk about their free-scoring Brazilian attacker Alex Teixeira earlier in January, but the Reds have been met with nothing but hostility ever since.

Teixeira has been left frustrated as Jurgen Klopp's side have fallen short with their bids for his services, and he looks certain to be staying in the Ukraine until the summer at least.

Jamie Vardy

Why won't he move? Why would he want to?

Leciester City and Chelsea have engaged in what is almost a role reversal throughout this season, so the idea of swapping the top of the table for the bottom half shouldn't really come into Jamie Vardy's mind.

Of course the switch to Stamford Bridge would benefit him in a financial sense, but if the man who scored in a record 11 Premier League matches in a row is going to try his luck at one of the division's "bigger" clubs, then the move is likelier to come in the summer.

Wilfried Bony

Linked with: Swansea City (Wales Online)

Why won't he move? Because Manchester City don't have time to replace him.

A return to Swansea City doubtless appealed to Wilfried Bony at the beginning of the transfer window, but the possibility of it happening virtually evaporated when the Swans signed the Italian forward Alberto Paloschi from Chievo on Friday.

The Ivorian's Manchester City career has never really got going, and with City surely ready to go shopping for a big-name forward in the summer, his time at the Etihad Stadium could be running out just a year after he signed.

Alexandre Lacazette

Why won't he move? He could do better.

The apple of many a big club's eye last season because of his fantastic goalscoring form—he notched 27 in Ligue 1—Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette hasn't quite enjoyed the same level of performance this campaign.

The France international will likely still hope to secure a switch to the Premier League in the summer, though, and he'll know by rebuffing struggling Newcastle United's interest in him that he's better positioned to get the transfer he'll feel his talent deserves.

Joe Allen

Why won't he move? Because he's becoming increasingly important to Liverpool.

Swansea City seem to have specialised in transfer links with their former players in this window, with Joe Allen's name also on the agenda following the links with Wilfried Bony.

The Wales international might well be set to leave Liverpool in the summer, when Jurgen Klopp will be looking to bring in his own players, but after scoring vital goals against Arsenal and Exeter City, notching the winning penalty in the Capital One Cup semi-final shootout against Stoke City and captaining the side in the FA Cup against West Ham United in January alone, he's needed by his manager.

Marouane Fellaini

Why won't he move? Because Louis van Gaal needs him.

If there is to be a new Manchester United manager next season, then he's got the perfect chance to get fans immediately onside. All he would have to do is sell Marouane Fellaini.

Until then, though, the Belgian will continue to be a fairly important member of Louis van Gaal's United squad, offering an outlet ball and opportunity for the Dutchman to go long when his side are struggling, as they frequently have been.

Odion Ighalo

Linked with: Chelsea (the Independent)

Why won't he move? Because Watford won't let him and he seems happy to stay.

One of the revelations of this Premier League season, Nigerian forward Odion Ighalo has made scoring look easy as he's led the line with aplomb for Watford.

Chelsea, as well as numerous other Premier League clubs, could have done with his goals this season, but if they are to make a bid for his services, then any deal will likely be left until the summer.

Ezequiel Lavezzi

Why won't he move? Because he can get a huge payday in the summer.

Ezequiel Lavezzi's Paris Saint-Germain contract will run out in the summer, meaning that the Argentinian forward can negotiate a free transfer in the summer, when he is likely to make the last high-profile switch of his career.

Now 30, Lavezzi still has a good few years left in him at the highest level, and he would add a lot to whichever team wishes to add him to their ranks.

Andriy Yarmolenko

Linked with: Arsenal (the Star, via the Mirror)

Why won't he move? Logistics.

It would be hugely surprising if Arsenal were to complete a deal for a player based in Ukraine on transfer deadline day, with Andriy Yarmolenko much more likely to complete a much-anticipated move elsewhere in the summer.

Winger Yarmolenko has the talent to be a major addition to any side, and he's likely to spark a bidding war for his services in the close season, especially if he has a good Euro 2016 with Ukraine.
