Floyd Mayweather's Dig at Oscar De La Hoya Answered by Golden Boy Team

Matt Jones

A spokesman for Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy promotions has issued a response to Floyd Mayweather following Money's recent criticisms of the iconic fighter.

Mayweather said of De la Hoya (h/t FightHype.com), "I don't respect a man that dress[es] in drag," among other comments, which prompted the following response from Golden Boy's Stefan Friedman, issued in a statement to Bleacher Report:

"Clearly Floyd is bored in his likely temporary retirement, and with his promotions company struggling, he has little to do but flick jabs at the country's No. 1 boxing promoter.

"Of course, Floyd is hardly one to talk about personal flaws, and he might want to take a long look in the mirror before he pops off again.

"All told, seven women have accused Floyd of at least one form of domestic abuse over the last 13 years. These allegations have led to convictions, jail time and financial settlements for domestic battery, harassment, coercion, and other crimes -- all against women.

"Oscar has repeatedly apologised and taken responsibility for his past actions that have only hurt himself and his family. Floyd has yet to do the same for numerous women who have suffered at his hands; literally.

"Maybe Floyd should take responsibility for the damage he has inflicted on those outside the ring before throwing stones."

As noted by Jake Donovan of BoxingScene.com, De la Hoya battled personal demons after being out-pointed by Mayweather in their lucrative bout in 2007 and was involved in a "drug-fuelled cross-dressing scandal." He also admitted to cheating on his partner and a drug addiction in an interview with Univision in 2011 (h/t Fox Sports).

Mayweather has also had his problems. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail back in December 2011 having pleaded guilty to assaulting his ex-girlfriend in front of two of their children, per BBC. In the piece it's also noted Mayweather "has been involved in a string of criminal cases for violence since 2002."

Money retired from the sport last year with a record of 49 victories from 49 professional fights and, although plenty expect him to return, he's left a tremendous legacy for his work inside the ring.

De la Hoya's also considered a great of the sport, retiring after a loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2008 having won 39 and lost six of his 45 bouts.

The fight between the two was arguably the biggest test each man faced during their respective careers. Here are some of the highlights of the bout, which Mayweather won via split decision:

Barbs from each side of this rivalry have been commonplace of late. De la Hoya actually penned an open letter to Mayweather in Playboy last year, in which he labelled Money "boring" and "afraid of taking chances." In response, Mayweather said, per David Mayo of MLive.com, the Golden Boy was merely "jealous" of him.

There was even some tentative talk last year about De la Hoya returning to the ring for a possible rematch with Mayweather in 2015, although those claims were dismissed by the former, per Tim Hill of the Guardian.
