Fernando Torres Injury: Updates on Atletico Madrid Star's Ankle and Return

Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres looks set for a spell on the sidelines after he picked up an ankle injury.

Continue for updates.

Torres Likely Out of Rayo Clash

Wednesday, Jan. 13

"The striker from Madrid suffers a traumatic injury to the right ankle with joint effusion and bone edema at the anterior margin level of the tibial pilon," read a statement on the club's website.

"He has undergone imaging testing (MRI) and has had an intra-articular infiltration. The striker will undergo a physical therapy treatment and do alternative training in the gym, pending the evolution of his injury," the statement added.

Manu de Juan in AS reported that Torres' injury "looks certain" to rule him out of Atleti's Copa del Rey clash against Rayo Vallecano at the Vicente Calderon on Thursday.

Diego Simeone has decent depth in attack, and Jackson Martinez, Luciano Vietto and Angel Correa will provide cover in the 31-year-old's absence.

However, Torres will surely be bitterly disappointed to have picked up an injury, and it is another blow in a tricky season for the Spaniard.

The former Chelsea and Liverpool man has not found the back of the net since September—a run of 19 goalless games—and remains one goal short of his 100th for Atletico, per UEFA.

He will now have to hope for a speedy recovery from his ankle problem.

Simeone will also be eager to see Torres return quickly, as he will need as many options as possible across his squad if Atleti are to keep their place at the top of the La Liga table until the end of the season.
