Atletico Madrid vs. Reus Deportiu: Winners and Losers from Copa Del Rey

Michael Cummings

Atletico Madrid moved into the last 16 of the Copa del Rey with a 1-0 victory against third-tier Reus Deportiu on Thursday. Following a 2-1 win from the first leg, Atletico advanced 3-1 on aggregate.

Thomas Partey, making his senior debut for Atletico, scored the winner in the second half with a bouncing volley. Atletico had another goal ruled out moments earlier.

Here, Bleacher Report selects winners and losers from the match.

Winner: Thomas Partey

Thomas Partey made his first start of the campaign for Atletico and marked the occasion with the winning goal.

The opportunity came in the 53rd minute, when Reus were unable to fully clear their box following a cross. The ball fell to the Ghanaian, who hit a bouncing volley into the bottom corner for the game's only goal.

Before Thursday, the 22-year-old had appeared just twice for Atletico, coming on as a second-half substitute against Espanyol on Nov. 28, and at Granada on Dec. 5.

Atletico's quality in midfield means Partey will find opportunities tough to come by, but this performance can only help his cause.

Loser: Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres returned to Atletico's starting lineup for the first time since Dec. 5, playing the full 90 minutes in Diego Simeone's front line. El Nino missed plenty of openings and thus only hurt his chances of seeing more playing time.

The Spaniard's first opportunity came in the 17th minute as Jesus Gamez fired in a good cross from the right. Torres was unmarked eight yards from goal but could only fire weakly at Edgar Badia, who saved.

Five minutes later, Koke curled a free kick into the area for Torres, who rose highest to power a low header on target. Badia saved again with a dive to his right.

Torres was undone by a top save on that occasion, but he wasted a bigger chance in the 30th minute. Gamez played the role of provider again with a cross from the right. Torres was again unmarked but rolled a tame effort straight at Badia.

Those missed chances would have been enough to make him a loser in our slideshow, but Torres missed again in the 89th minute, blasting way over the bar after good build-up play by Atletico.

Torres has had many a brilliant day in Atletico's colors, but this was not one of them.

Winner: Jesus Gamez

As noted in the previous slide, Jesus Gamez created plenty of danger down Atletico's right flank. The full-back frequently blew past his marker and whipped in inviting crosses for the forward line, most notably setting up Fernando Torres several times.

Had Torres converted either of the two big chances Gamez served up, this would have been a very different scoreline. Even so, Gamez contributed enough to the attack to warrant inclusion as a winner here.

Winner: Edgar Badia

It didn't take a genius to detect the differences between the two sides at kickoff. Even with a weakened lineup, Atletico had more talented players, with quality all over the pitch.

The La Liga side had plenty of chances to put the game away in the first half, but instead, the third-tier minnows remained alive at halftime with the score still 0-0. Goalkeeper Edgar Badia deserved a healthy amount of credit for that.

As noted in the Fernando Torres slide, Badia made a pair of saves against El Nino one-on-one. In addition to good goalkeeping, he also got a slice of luck in the 31st minute, when a Koke free kick beat him but bounced off the post.

Thomas Partey did eventually beat Badia in the second half, but Reus couldn't have asked for much more from their goalkeeper.

Winner: Reus Deportiu

Atletico won the tie comfortably in the end, claiming a 3-1 aggregate victory thanks to Thomas Partey's lone goal. But at no point over the two legs did Reus Deportiu embarrass themselves.

On the contrary, the third-tier side should be proud of the effort shown by the players. Atletico currently sit level on points with Barcelona atop the La Liga table, but Reus acquitted themselves well against one of Europe's top sides.

"We'll go with everything we have, as always, and with what we understand will make us continue in this Copa del Rey," Atletico coach Diego Simeone told reporters this week, per Goal.com.

Without seeing either of the matches of this round-of-32 tie, many observers might have guessed that Simeone was merely saying flattering things about an upcoming opponent. But Reus proved Simeone right: Taking the minnow for granted would have been a huge mistake.

Now that we've given Reus their due, it's time for Atletico. Admittedly, this was far from a dominant performance, but manager Diego Simeone picked a weakened side that got the job done. That's all that matters.

This latest result means Los Colchoneros have won nine straight matches in all competitions and are unbeaten in their last 15. Atletico are currently level with Barcelona atop La Liga and must be brimming with confidence.

As 2015 winds down, Simeone has his side in excellent form. And as 2016 approaches, that can only bode well for their chances of winning silverware.
