Brock Lesnar's "Go to Hell" tour began in dominant fashion Saturday night at Madison Square Garden as the Beast Incarnate defeated the Big Show as part of a WWE Network special in New York City.
Lesnar withstood three Chokeslams from the Big Show before hitting the F-5 and winning the match, per the WWE Universe:
ESPN's Robert Flores figures Show did a lot better than he thought he would have in the ring against Lesnar:
In Lesnar's first match since losing to The Undertaker at SummerSlam, he locked horns with a familiar opponent, as he and the World's Largest Athlete have quite a history together. Prior to Saturday's clash, the two physically imposing Superstars had previously faced each other in singles matches on six different occasions.
The Conqueror held a 5-1 advantage entering the live special, but Big Show defeated Lesnar way back in 2002 for the WWE Championship, and it just so happens that it occurred at MSG.
Big Show played up that fact during the build toward Saturday's show and expressed a great deal of confidence in his ability to beat Lesnar, according to WWE Universe on Twitter:
Despite Big Show's imposing size and the fact that he had beaten Lesnar before, Paul Heyman was similarly comfortable in predicting his client would be the one to come out on top:
WWE did all it could to build up Big Show in the weeks prior to the Madison Square Garden card. He defeated Cesaro on Raw and followed that up the next week by decimating Mark Henry in what amounted to a squash match.
Despite the creative team's best efforts to make Big Show look like a legitimate threat, it was difficult for the bulk of the fanbase to buy into that narrative since Lesnar has been presented as the most dominant force in sports entertainment for the past couple of years.
Also, Lesnar is set to face The Undertaker in a Hell in a Cell match at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view later this month, which suggested to most that he would pick up a big victory against the future WWE Hall of Famer in NYC.
Many of those who attended the show and watched it on WWE Network did so in order to see The Beast throw around a 7-foot giant, and that is precisely what he did as he beat Big Show yet again.
There wasn't much mystery or surprise surrounding this match, but Lesnar is an attraction, and Big Show can be when he is handled correctly.
WWE allowed Lesnar to demonstrate his pure strength and ability Saturday night, and even though his bout with Big Show didn't necessarily feel fresh, he scored a victory that should give him some momentum heading toward Hell in a Cell.
