Marcelo Bielsa Resigns as Olympique Marseille Manager: Latest Details, Reaction

Christopher Simpson

Marcelo Bielsa has resigned as manager of Ligue 1 outfit Olympique de Marseille.

The club posted the Argentinian's announcement on Twitter, with ESPN FC relaying the news in English:

"OM can't be prisoner of the demands of someone who puts his interests well above those of the institution," announced Marseille, per Tom Williams of Agence France-Presse.

Reaction poured in on social media, with ESPN's Gabriele Marcotti and the BBC's John Bennett criticising Bielsa for leaving Marseille just one game into the new season:

Elsewhere, it was noted by BT's Archie Rhind-Tutt and ESPN's James Tyler the resignation was typical of the mercurial manager:

Bielsa has recently been linked with the vacant Mexico national team job, following the dismissal of Miguel Herrera in the tumultuous aftermath of their CONCACAF Gold Cup win in July.

Per Dejan Kalinic of Goal.com, the 60-year-old denied on Thursday that he had been contacted about the vacancy: "I haven't spoken with anyone at the Mexican Federation. This shows that it's only an hypothesis, and I don't discuss hypothesis."

Futboltotal's Eric Gomez nevertheless believes Mexico to be his most likely destination:

Bielsa has extensive experience as an international manager, having had lengthy spells with Argentina and Chile.

In Mexico, Bielsa would be taking over a winning team still enjoying their Gold Cup victory and one with a lot of promising players, like Javier Hernandez and Carlos Vela.

Should he get the job, it will be important for Bielsa to maintain Mexico's winning mentality as he builds toward the 2018 World Cup.

As for Marseille, they will need to work quickly to bring in a new manager.

Losing their coach so early on will undoubtedly have disrupted their plans, so a steady new appointment is needed to bring stability on and off the pitch.
